London: Picador/ Pan Books, 1988. FIRST UK EDITION. 8vo, pp. 227, [5], incl. Acker's own b/w line drawings. Original black cloth, spine lettered in silver. Bruising to spine ends. Uneven tanning to edges, toned. Else, clean and tidy. In the original illustrated dust jacket: gentle creasing and wear to edges, gently toned on reverse. Very good/ very good Acker dedicated Empire of the Senseless to "my tattooist". Empire of the Senseless was the experimental writer and performance artist's fifth book from a major publisher and her first foray into science fiction. Despite its setting in the speculative near future, "it remains insolently rooted in the world in which we belong, anchored by Acker's stubborn commitment to rendering visible the sexist, racist, capitalistic, father-fucking societal ego of her timeďż˝and of our own. Kathy Acker is a muckraker in the original sense, one who dredges up the dirt and puts it on display to the delight and horror of the reading public." (Kleeman, 2018). Acker…

London: J. M. Dent and Sons Ltd, 1946. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. 186 + map, and numerous b/w full-page photographic illustrations to rear. Blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Top edge blue (faded). Pushing to heel of spine, extremities a trifle rubbed, bands of sunning to board edges, especially bottom. Toned, POI to ffep, else, clean and tight. In the original photographic dust jacket: creased and rubbed, losses to spine ends, and top of rear panel, with amateur repairs to reverse. Very good/ good. Much-loved Scottish journalist, translator and mountaineer Janet Adam Smith's classic memoir of her pre-war climbs in the Highlands and the Alps. Already recognised as an authority on Robert Louis Stevenson, her editions of his poems and his correspondence with Henry James soon followed. Indeed, "[i]ntellectually Adam Smith was heir to the Scottish Enlightenment and Edinburgh reviewers" and did much to champion Scottish literature, with her 1965 biography of John Buchan deemed a "masterpiece" (ODNB). London: Macmillan, 1975. FIRST UK EDITION. 8vo. Original black buckram, spine lettered in white. Illustrated endpapers, the "design taken from a sketch of Moreton Bay held at the Mitchell Library, Sydney" (author's note). Bruising to head of spine. Toned, erratum slip (originally inserted at author's note), pasted directly, by PO, to p. 232, over incorrect lines. Else, clean and tight. In the original illustrated dust jacket: edgewear and creasing. A solid copy of Anderson's own favourite novel (not the Regency Romance it appears). Very good/ very good Jessica Anderson (1926-2010) was a prize-winning Australian novelist, whose third, true crime, novel recounts the murder of Captain Patrick Logan, the notoriously brutal Commandant of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement, 1826-30. The novelist's version uses Logan's young (fictionalised) sister-in-law to offer her own commentary on events. Anderson once drew parallels between the Moreton Bay social climate and Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford!
