Abbott, Berenice (American 1898-1991). ADRIENNE MONNIER, PARIS. Vintage gelatin silver print, not dated. Signed by Abbott, verso, and With her 50 Commerce Street studio stamp also verso. Hinged to a mount. In excellent condition. Adrienne Monnier (French, 1891-1955) was one of the first women in France to have her own bookstore and publsihing company in France. Along with Sylvia Beach, of Shakespeare and Company, she was one one of the most influential literary figures in Paris during the 1920s and 30s. Berenice Abbott lived in Paris during much of that time; according to Sylvia Beach, if one were photographed by Abbott or by Man Ray, it "meant you rated as somebody."

This print has an affinity with the Artist's "Subway Work at Night, Moscow" of 1935, but may also be one of a group of prints he made for the WPA Federal Arts Project between 1935 and 1939. Privately printed, Japan, 1937. 8vo., Japanese style cloth portfolio with bone clasps and paper label, Japanese style sewn binding in pictorial wraps, with accordion folded sheets. Title page in Japanese, 13pp. introduction, six pages of photographs, 84pp text, label in Japanese also saying "Made in Nippon" on the inside rear wrapper. This is the original edition. OCLC locates 12 copies, APBC records no copies at auction. There is a 1965 reprint by Tuttle, a copy of which accompanies this copy. This copy belonged to Duncan Phillips and his wife, who was Acker's sister. The book Fine, the portfolio spine somewhat faded, and with cracks to the inside paper lining at the folds. Very Rare.

Both with a tack hole top and and bottom, center, and with residue from an old mount, verso. One wih a 1/2 x 1/2 inch loss at the top right corner. The images fresh. One shows two hunters with grass head-dress disguises, crouched behind low grasses,each with a rifle, a killed deer between them, and a herd moving across the field on the far side of the grasses. The other depicts two hunters wearing animal-skin disguises, each with a rifle, crouched behind grasses, beyond which a small herd of bison grazes.
