A scarce account of Sir George Back's 1836 expedition to complete a survey of the coastline between Regent's Inlet and Cape Turnagain. The result was a terrible and harrowing journey. Off Cape Comfort the ship was frozen in for ten months, and then drifted up Frozen Channel. For three days she was on her beam ends, and was not completely free until four months later. On July 14, the following year, a submerged iceberg lifted the ship bodily to one side, but she was eventually righted. "...Full of details of his commerce with the Cree, Chippewa, and Coppermine Indians...a fundamental source of information about Indian life along the route of the Arctic expedition" - Streeter. This private expedition was undertaken to search for the second Ross expedition. Back and his party went from Montreal to Great Slave Lake, then overland to the Arctic Ocean. The narrative also contains valuable information on Arctic flora and fauna. A basic Arctic exploration. The Streeter copy sold to parties unknown for $90 in 1969. This copy bears the bookplates and ownership signatures of Philip Philip Livingston (1741- 87), the descendant of the prominent Livingston family of New York State. His bookplate is also on the front pastedown of both volumes, and his ink stamp is on the first volume's titlepage. Baker, one of the great explorers of central Africa in search of the source of the Nile, offers observations on the natural history, topography, and inhabitants of Abyssinia (Ethiopia). Hunting episodes with the crocodile, hippopotamus, giraffe, elephant, rhinoceros and gazelle. The author had earlier toured Ceylon in 1845 and settled there for a time. One map depicts Sir Baker's routes and discoveries along the Nile, and the other shows his routes on the Nile tributaries of Abyssinia

This highly detailed and well-executed chart depicts the island divided into its parishes, and contains a wealth of early information relating to houses, churches, forts, sugar mills, and individual properties. The borders of each parish are outlined in contemporary hand color, and the shores of the island, with bays, ports, shoals, and soundings are delineated with great accuracy.
