Bound in half red straight-grain morocco over marbled boards. Hinges and cap ends reinforced for strength, along with upper joint on volume 1. Scattered foxing. Map abraded near title, and one panel fold split. Explorer, social liberal, abolitionist, Samuel Baker was appointed by khedive Ismail the Magnificent to lead a military force up the Nile into the Sudan in 1869 to suppress the slave trade there. He was given the rank of Major General in the Ottoman Army and outfitted with 1,700 troops. The storied Florence Baker was also present. Basically, Baker spent five years establishing the Ottoman province of Equatoria and serving as its governor-general, until he ceded the post to Charles George "Chinese" Gordon (played by Charlton Heston in the movie "Khartoum"). Baker returned to London where he published this account. He remained at the outer fringes of…

Description:
Lucca: Dalla tipografia Bertini, 1826. Original edition. Fine. Octavo (22 cm), xiv, [1 blank] pages. Printed on wove paper with Bodoni-style type. In stiff plain paste-paper boards. Remarkable fresh and fine. A collection of epithalamia for the wedding of Francesca Cosi del Vollia to the noted engraver Antonio Viviani in the city of Lucca. The collection opens with a sonnet by Lucca's most famous poet, Teresa Bandettini, who had settled in her home town after years on the road. Bandettini had achieved something like rock-star status for her performances of improvised poetry and dance in the salons and theaters of the peninsula. Inducted into the Academmia degli Arcadi, she signs her sonnet here with her Arcadian name, Amarilli Etrusca. See my recent article on Bandettini and other improvisational poets on my web site or on the website of the Fellowship of American Bibliophilic Societies.

Negligible foxing. The whole preserved in custom-made clamshell box. References: Ferri, 33; Parenti, "Rarità bibliografiche" (1958) vol 4, p. 72. At age 27, wildly famous for her remarkable performances of improvised poetry and dance, Teresa Bandettini published this narrative poem about love, jealousy, and grief. This work, and others to follow, betrayed the author's ambition to exceed her career as an "improvvisatrice" and compose written poetry. Indeed, Bandettini was a driven artist. She was…

Description:
Lucca: Tipografia Ducale, 1825. Original edition. Fine. Octavo (20 cm); 8 pages. In stiff green marbled-paper wraps. Epithalamion by the celebrated improvisational poet, Teresa Bandettini, who packed theaters and thrilled audiences with her spontaneous verses accompanied by dance. The marriage--between the 62-year-old Prince Maximilian of Saxony and the 23-year-old Maria Luisa Carlotta--took place in Lucca by proxy without the bride being present! (They had a second ceremony in person in Dresden later that year.) Max had been Luisa Carlotta's uncle by marriage. Anyway, the important thing here is the poetry of Teresa Bandettini, who had returned to her native Lucca after a career on the road as an improvvisatrice. The poem is a hymn to Hymen, the Greek deity associated with marriage and, of course, the wedding night.
