San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1973. First edition thus. Hardcover. A fine copy, entirely clean and unworn in dakened plain paper jacket. Tan cloth and decorative boards, paper spine label, octavo, 91 pp. Frontispiece. Reprint of the very rare 1861 original edition. Cover design duplicates the title page (or cover) of the original edition. Hozial Baker came overland with a handful of other travellers to California at the age of 70. His diary of the journey begins in St. Joseph, Missouri on March 29, 1859 and reaches its apex at Placerville, California on Dec. 31 of the year. The rest of the trip was largely by steamer (Sacramento to San Francisco, the SF to home in Seneca, NY by ship. (Howes B49 for the original edition, noting only 4 copies known to exist).

Original decorated cloth; 12mo (5.25 x 7.75 inches), 64 pp. With printed "Compliments of the Publisher" slip tipped to front free endpaper with ink note scrawled on the slip: "This book has just turned up after years of hiding. If never seen by you will be intersting. (signed) R."

New York: Frederick A. Stokes, nd (circa 1936). Early reprint. Very fine; entirely clean and unworn in moderately edgeworn jacket. The quality of the illustrations is very good; crisp with well-defined colors . Original red cloth with color pictorial pastedown label on front board, 5.75 x 4.25 inches; frontispiece, ii-iv, [1], 56 pp., text and illustrations printed on both sides of the leaf, color pictorial jacket. This printing not described in Barton, though it is most akin to the suggested 1942 printing described there. There are two principle differences: publisher location in 1942 printing is New York & Philadelphia, ours is New York only; page numbers were printed in blue ink in the 1942 printing, ours are black. As jackets are seldom seen on early printings of this book Barton offers nothing to compare with. Topeka: Kansas State Horticultural Society, 1901. First edition. Covers moderately worn but quite presentable, text clean. Very good. 139 pp., frontispiece, 1 engraved text illustration, octavo, original green cloth with gilt title. As Kansas had statewide prohibition from 1881 to 1948 this was not (at least officially) a manual of viniculture. The text is primarily a compilation of contributions from grape growers throughout the state telling of their experiences in growing grapes. Scarce.

A lavishly illustrated study of this Italian15th-century illuminated book of hours - called the greatest of the museum's Italian renaissance manuscripts. This is the volume in the Getty Museum Monographs on Illuminated Manuscripts series.
