Jacket has some edge-wear and a few small chips. Barnes drafted this roman à clef in the summer of 1932 during a stay at Peggy Guggenheim's Devonshire manor, using the working title, Bow Down, as she fictionalized the exploits of her real-life bohemian compatriots. Later that year she would travel to Morocco with Charles Henri Ford, who helped her type an early version of the manuscript. This beautiful New Classics Series edition (NC 11) features olive-colored full buckram boards, a jacket by quintessential mid-century modernist Alvin Lustig, and an intro by T. S. Wade, in his foreword to this study of two boomtowns, writes, 'Both owed their early growth to the discovery of gold; both fed off the kinetic transiency of prospectors and speculators; both witnessed spectacular initial growth later fortified by the transportation revolution.' Wade's 1959 book, The Urban Frontier, confronted Frederick Jackson Turner's Frontier Thesis, positing that western expansion was precipitated by cities like Pittsburgh, Louisville, and Cincinnati rather than by agrarian pioneers, and that these urban centers in turn became seats of political power that rivaled those on the Eastern Seaboard.
