The story of the dolls' adventures after running away from their little owner who appears with them in some photos. They meet various animals and another little girl. An enchanting book. Head and tail of spine and corners slightly rubbed, minute chip to plate on upper cover (at dress hem), 1 or 2 very slight fox spots, 3 mm (1/8") brown stain in the middle of 6 text pages. Bookseller's small pale stamp to background of upper cover, small name in upper margin of same, a little pale foxing to first few pages. A very good copy. First published in 1885, the last toy book in the series of 16. There is no way of telling from the lower cover whether this is a first edition, but the adverts do not list the edition which collects all 16 titles, published in 1887. This nonsense poem was written by the English dramatist Samuel Foote to test the actor Macklin who had boasted he could memorise anything he had heard or read only once. See Osborne I,63. Sevenoaks, J. Salmon Ltd, "Academy" series, circa 1930.. Circa 1930, size of Tea Table base: 50 x 135 mm, 5 x 14 inches, height of figures approximately 220-195 mm, 9-7½ inches, approximately 110 wooden pieces. Alice holds either a piglet or a teacup and all three figures can fit onto the table. 1 piece is missing (see figure of March Hare, image 3) otherwise all pieces are in very good undamaged condition. Contained in original box with black and white Guide on bottom of lower tray, box size: 280 x 210 x 35 mm, 11 x 8½ x 1½ inches. Lid slightly worn on edges with a small split on 1 top corner and 1 top side, now expertly repaired, lower tray a little bumped, 2 old sellotape marks on sides, 1 affecting, but not obscuring, text below Guide picture, all 4 corners neatly strengthened externally.
