Calderon was an English painter who initially worked in the Pre-Raphaelite style, especially the "St. John's Wood Clique," who patterned their work after the PRB. "I cannot tell you how very much sorry I am that I have not been able to get round to se your 3 pictures today. My own picture (I only have one) is so much behindhand that I have three models coming tomorrow (think of that) and plenty to do till my "show days" Saturday & Sunday..."

Bound in three-quarter dark brown polished calf with morocco label (maroon) to spine, gilt ruing to spine, attractive marbled boards, 134 pp. All edges marbled. Contains rare inserted slip containing an explanation of the correct etymology of the Gaelic word, 'Pelloch' appearing on p.8, line 7. A beautiful, tall copy, very fine. Campbell was a fairly successful early 19th Century Scottish poet whose book of verse here described was quite popular.

Offered here are two superb original watercolor on illustrations on art board by Eleanor Campbell, the original and premier illustrator of the Dick and Jane books. Illustrations appear in the book, "We Come and Go," Chicago, Scott, Foresman and Co. and form appear on pages 55 and 58 of the first issue of the book. A charming pair of scenes showing the progression of Spot watching Jane and Father getting into their bright green car to go on a picnic (p. 55, full-page illustration entitled "Away We Go"), and the second (p.58) showing Jane opening the door to let the 'forgotten' Spot into the car: "Come in, Spot," said Jane. "The accomplishment of Will Bradley (1868-1962) as the complete craftsman, capable of executing a book from start to finish, places him as one of the foremost figures in the Arts & Crafts movement in America and as one of the most imaginative artists working in book decoration during the 1890's." Original decorative cover stamped in red-brown and balck by the prominent Massachusetts illustrator, printmaker, sculptor and designer, Theodore Brown Hapgood. A very scarce title, certainly considering it was illustrated by Peter Newell, and with stunning cover design by Hapgood. No copies located on the Net at time of writing. Fine condition.

Original blue fine weave cloth with gorgeous all over gilt blocked cover design by Margaret Armstrong consisting of grapes and grape vine on a trellis, also used for spine. This model cover design appears in later Putnam titles (Morris, Tennyson, Emerson, Rossettis) however, in those later uses, clumsy lettering by another hand was employed, as per Gullans. With superb frontispiece photograph of Tennyson by J. M. Cameron. Corners bumped, spine with wear at extr., very good.

This is the quite rare first edition of 1899, the only copy on the market as of this date. Two marks are rear cover, slight wear to corners, and margins of spine. Overall the binding is very good, and near fine in the interior. Gullans #61.

Original cloth backed color pictorial paper covered boards, color illustrated endpapers. 43pp with color illustrations every page, many whole page by Gertrude and Walther Caspari, important illustrators of the Jugendstil movement. Second printing issued just one year following the first edition. "Caspari's scale, strong contouring and striking perspective and finesse of presentation aims at both the smallest child to read and then take up and read again for years to come..." (Doderer). A superb copy, near fine.

Eleven pages of full and half-page color illustrations by Walthar Caspari, delicately designed color endpapers. A fine copy in a dust wrapper that has been clipped off at the bottom, otherwise it is near fine. Book as new. A most scarce and beautiful book in this condition.

Smith to expertly bind (signed on rear lower dentelle of volume two in gilt pallet: "Bound by W. H. Smith and Son," An impressive binding with five large raised bands extending slightly onto covers forming a triangle, six large raised bands and two extending out at top and bottom, six panels, two of which contain gilt-stamped lettering. Printed in Ptolemy type, designed for its first use by Emery Walker, in black and red, double column, shoulder notes in red, chapter headings in red beneath chapter numbers in black, two three-quarter page borders, 18-line and smaller initial capitals or opening words in a stylized black-on-white leaf and tendril pattern, designed by Louise Powell and cut on wood by W. A difficult title to find, especially in fine condition. Our copy is exemplary, very fine, with very light browntoning to endsheets and first free fly which is almost universally seen in abundance.
