Mary Whitcher was a member of New Hampshire's Canterbury Shaker community, a poetess, and the author of Mary Whitchers Shaker Housekeeper (1882), which is recognized as "the earliest cookbook in Shaker culinary literature, and the first to give bills of fare, or menus, for each day of the week together with 150 nutritious recipes for preparing a variety of fresh, natural foods. The book was not sold but was given, in accordance with the custom of the day, to those interested in the Shaker medicines advertised therein" (Amy Bess Miller, in the introduction to the 1972 facsimile edition of Shaker Cooking). The photograph is in fine condition, and contains a small contemporary ink inscription on the verso, "Mary Whitcher, Betsy Wright"

Publisher's advertisement to final page. Second edition; originally issued together with - but now separated from - Buchan, William, Domestic medicine; or, The family physician... Cadogan's Dissertation on the Gout has separate paging and a special title page with imprint. Aitken used this imprint from 1770 until 1773. The text is typographically identical with the Philadelphia 1771 edition printed by John Dunlap for Aitken (and crediting Dunlap). "William Cadogan (1711-1797) was one of the first to publicly blame the occurrence of gout upon its victims' immoderate habits, identifying the causes of the disease as 'Indolence, Intemperance and Vexation.' New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1859. Octavo, vi, 130, [2] pages. Ads. First edition. James Caird (1816-92) was an agriculturalist and member of the British Parliament, author of English Agriculture, Letters on the Corn Crops, High Farming, and The West of Ireland. This volume was the result of a tour he undertook in 1859 through Canada and the American Midwest. Much of the volume is devoted to Illinois, though Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio receive a fairly thorough treatment. Includes sections on the quality of the soils, on prairie grasses, Indian corn, and more. A bit of a tide line to the fore edge of the title page; some light foxing throughout; in gilt-titled mauve cloth, with a bit of sun fading to spine, but otherwise near fine. While present in many institutional collections, this title remains scarce in the trade. [Howes C19; Sabin 9854].

Nashville, Tennessee: [the author; Benson Printing Company, 1929. Octavo (23.5 x 15.5 cm.), 215 pages. Index. FIRST EDITION. A collection of recipes, gathered "from hither and yon" by the compiler, Anne Foster Caldwell, founder of the Nashville chapter of the Housewives League of America, and head of the Home Department of the Centennial Club, was head of Victory Gardens of Nashville. Internally clean and sound. In publisher's white cloth, gilt-titled on the spine and front panel. Light soil and a small puncture to the cloth at the spine. Near very good. Envelope labeled "Household Hints" laid-in at rear, with a half dozen clippings and one recipe for treating fruit trees for bugs, typed in red and black ink. Scarce. San Francisco, CA; Louisville, New York, London: California Fig Syrup Co, 1895. Stapled booklet (15 x 9 cm.), 20 pages. Text and illustrations printed in dark blue ink throughout. FIRST EDITION. A promotional book (not a cookbook) for California Fig Syrup, a patent medicine employed as a laxative. Also called Elixir of Senna, the concoction had no figs in it whatsoever. This booklet seeks to tie the "purity" and "excellence" of the product to similar qualities which, at the time, were seen by the public to reside in the State of California. And so the book is illustrated with images of notable scenery of the state, including San Francisco's Cliff House, Yosemite, Santa Barbara, and other popular sites. Some light foxing throughout; tiny bit of edge wear. Very good. [OCLC locates four copies].

[Toronto, Canada]: Richard Moore, sole agent for Canada and the eastern states, 1860. Small octavo, sewn in wrappers (15 x 9.5 cm.), 64 pages. Table of contents. Stated "Third Edition" but no record of any earlier issue. "This package contains one complete set of Professor Cameron's celebrated copyright recipes" announces the printed yellow wrapper, which looks a good deal more like the wrapper of a food product than that of a booklet. A book with two purposes: to explain the process of beer making to the interested layman, and to make the case for beer as the national beverage of Great Britain. The chapters cover the materials and art of brewing, ales of the past, beer and health, beer and special occasions, pairing beer with food, cooking with beer, customs related to beer and ale, and how to drink beer. A final section contains quotes about beer and ale through the ages. Fine in red cloth. in a very near fine dust jacket, unclipped but with a small early price sticker over the original. The jacket is decorated with a bright and colorful design by Rudland.

This volume seeks to "teach household science as well as cooking," and is based on the author's experience teaching in a large school in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Deaf and Dumb Institute, and "regular classes for ladies." In brown cloth, decorated with black and gilt stamped borders and titling. Lacking free front end paper; hinges started. Generally good or a bit better. Evident second printing, as OCLC records copies dated 1894. A product cookbook, containing salad recipes made with Horton-Cato's "Royal Salad Dressing." Some ink annotations to the margins, otherwise internally clean and sound. Wrappers, attractively printed in black, red, and yellow, are separated from the text, and split at the spine. Text in English, German and French throughout. FIRST EDITION. A promotional photograph album, with a title page and fourteen photographs, depicting the factory building, the trawler fleet, workers loading baskets with fish, a mechanical basket conveyor, sardines being set up to dry and later be boiled, the packing department at work, workers (mostly women), workers sealing the tins mechanically (mostly men), the tin assembling department and the worker's canteen. There is also a very interesting image of the children of workers being fed, with the explanation, "During the months of January to April, whilst the tinning of sardines is not allowed on account of the poor quality of the fish, we feed the workers' children at our expense." Date approximation from cover illustrations, "Patent Nov. 30th, 1858". An advertising booklet for the Porcelain Lined Cap for Mason's Jars, ostensibly to fight fraudulent imitations. Includes a belly band, printed in red and black, detailing the specifics of the Trade Mark labels found on boxes. A very similar booklet was printed by the "Press of Pinckney Brothers" (also of New York), with the subtitle, "none genuine unless the porcelain lining has the imprint, Consolidated Fruit Jar Co.' Some creases to upper right-hand corner of leaves, and a bit of light soil and chipping at the same. Overall, very good. Rare. [OCLC locates no exact matches, but one similar title, with the differences noted above].

An anthology saluting Kentucky fare, assembled under the guidance of a hostess transplanted from her native Covington to the District of Columbia, and issued just as the great Panic of 1893 paralyzed the American economy at the outset of Grover Cleveland's second term. A collection of classic French dishes with recipes by a former Chef d'Entremets at Delmonico's. Soups, sauces, fish, entreés, vegetables, etc. Internally fine, with all edges colored orange. This book was quite popular and went through a number of printings in the years following its issuance in 1885. [París, France: Paulot & Carré, 1828. Wallpaper broadside (45 x 51 cm.), with seven-color woodcut (black, orange, green, blue, white, gray, and brown). Printed on a brown paper coated with a pale blue pigment. The text states, "Bonne double bierre", and the scene depicts four soldiers in uniform being waited on by a woman. She pours a seated soldier a drink while another stands with his hand draped around her shoulder. Two more soldiers share a smoke, appearing to have had a few drinks already. Only the woman is clearly not enjoying herself. There are no identifying marks or labels on the broadside or on the matte, but the stated publisher and date, and the attribution to the printers Paulot & Carré, are inferred by comparison with a print of the same series in the collection of the Museé du Papier Peint, in Rexheim, France. That print, with the same text, background color, print colors and rough size, depicts two women and a child, seated under an arbor with a military officer, enjoying a drink.… Read More
