Description:
London, Hodder & Stoughton,, 1931.. 1931 328 p. Colour frontis., plates. Illustrations in the text. First edition. Publisher's black cloth binding, no dustwrapper. The spine lettering is faded and internally some signs of use. A large cache of ephemera is inserted, around 2 dozen items if the cuttings are included. Most important is a correspondence in 1945 between Mr. E. Robinson of Wimbledon with a number of barge owners regarding either passage in a working barge or the purchase of a barge for yachting. The barges named include Challenger, Hasteaway, British Oak, Fortis, Brian Wood and Tricolor. Edward Cory writes that his barge is '... engaged in carrying explosives for H.M. Government' from which one can suppose that her hull was tight. There is also a sketch on a calendar page for January 1945 of a barge sail plan with sail areas. Alongside is a calculation of the cost of each sail with the total of £159+ for a complete suit.
