Description:
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1940. Cabot, Hugh (1872-1945). The patient's dilemma: The quest for medical security in America. x, [2], 284pp. New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1940. 204 x 135 mm. Original cloth, spine faded, lower extremity frayed. Very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Cabot on the front endpaper: "To Curtis Bok Esq. With kindest regards Hugh Cabot." First Edition. Cabot, Professor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, was a strong advocate of group medical practice and of establishing a partnership between the federal government, medical schools and hospitals to combat the problem of providing health care to low-income and poor Americans. In the present work Cabot discusses some of the socio-economic issues affecting medical care, such as the impact of scientific discoveries (which often drive up the price of care), the need for medical security, the advantages of organized or group medical practice as opposed to individual practice, and the role of government and voluntary agencies in…

Description:
1813. Cadell, William Archibald (1775-1855). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified recipient. N.p., n.d. (1813 or after). 1 page. 198 x 160 mm. Mounted. Very good. Letter with good geological content from Scottish mathematician and antiquary W. A. Cadell, discussing the recent work of French mineralogist René-Just Hauy (1743-1822), famous for "Hauy's law" stating that every crystal of precise chemical structure and purity has a specific and characteristic shape: "I send you Lucas's work it may be interesting to your mineralogical acquaintances as it contains the alterations which M. Hauy has made in his method since the publication of his work. . . . "Some analysis of fer spath[...] [iron spar?] have shewn that it often contains no lime this contradicts the classification which Mr. Hauy has given of that substance for he places it under the head of carbonate of lime. . . ." "Lucas's work" refers to Jean-André-Henri Lucas's Tableau méthodique des espèces minérales, extraite du Tableau…

Description:
London: J. Dodsley, 1771. Cadogan, William (1711-1797). A dissertation on the gout, and all chronic diseases, jointly considered . . . 8vo. [iii]-viii, 88pp.; lacking half-title (A1). London: J. Dodsley, 1771. 202 x 127 mm. 20th-century half morocco, gilt-lettered spine, cloth boards. Last leaf somewhat soiled and frayed, but very good. Partially trimmed early inscription [ ". . . Bagot"] on title. From the library of Haskell F. Norman, with his bookplate. First Edition. Cadogan was one of the first to publicly blame the occurrence of gout upon its victims' immoderate habits, identifying the causes of the disease as "Indolence, Intemperance and Vexation." He rejected the traditional drastic treatments for gout, which included bleeding, purging and dosing with antimony, in favor of temperance, a moderate diet and regular exercise. These sensible recommendations did much to dispel the fashionable aura surrounding the disease and promoted a more rational and systematic approach to its alleviation. A…

Description:
Paris: Bailliere, 1826. 1st edition. Calmeil, Louis Florentin (1798-1895). De la paralysie consideree chez les alienes, recherches faites dans le service de feu M. Royer-Collard et de M. Esquirol. 8vo. [4] ii, 446pp. Paris and London: J.-B. Bailliere, 1826. 198 x 122 mm. Modern quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style. Light browning, but very good. One signature misbound. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 4797. Calmeil was a pupil of the French psychiatrist Esquirol. His treatise contains the classic description of general paralysis of the insane, along with an attempt to correlate the pathology of the disease with its clinical manifestations. However, Calmeil did not recognize that general paralysis was a separate disease entity (syphilis) and not simply a complication of mental illness. Norman 389. Zilboorg & Henry, p. 529. 305.

[Don't be sorry for not being able to accept what Jean D[. . .] offered you. The latter is an old friend but I don't know if he has talent or not and, in any case, don't feel in any way obliged to take into account my recommendation about it . . .]. Léon Charles Albert Calmette (12 July 1863 - 29 October 1933) was a French physician, bacteriologist and immunologist, and an important officer of the Pasteur Institute. He discovered the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, an attenuated form of Mycobacterium bovis used in the BCG vaccine against tuberculosis. He also developed the first antivenom for snake venom, the Calmette's serum (Wikipedia). .

Robert Stephanus, 1554. [Servetus, Michael (1511-53).] Calvin, John (1509-1564). Defensio Orthodoxae fidei de sacra Trinitate, contra prodigiosos errores Michaelis Serueti. 8vo. 261, [3]pp., including final blank. [Geneva:] Robert Estienne, 1554. 194 x 127 mm. 16th-century limp vellum, spine lettered in manuscript, light soiling. Minor soiling and dampstaining, lower edges of first 3 leaves a bit frayed, but very good. Early ownership inscriptions on the title. First Edition. Calvin, the Protestant religious reformer and founder of Calvinism, here defended the execution in 1553 of the notable humanist and polymath Michael Servetus for the latter's anti-Trinitarian beliefs. That same year Servetus had published his Christianismi restitutio, a work calling for the reformation of Christianity, which includes the first printed description of the lesser circulation (see Garrison-Morton.com 754); because of the heretical nature of this work, Calvin had Servetus arrested, tried and condemned to burn at…
