"Julian Lawndsley has renounced his high-flying job in the City for a simpler life running a bookshop in a small English seaside town. But only a couple of months into his new career, Julian's evening is disrupted by a visitor. Edward, a Polish émigré living in Silverview, the big house on the edge of town, seems to know a lot about Julian's family and is rather too interested in the inner workings of his modest new enterprise. When a letter turns up at the door of a spy chief in London warning him of a dangerous leak,… Read More

"From his years serving in British Intelligence during the Cold War to a career as a writer, John le Carré has lived a unique life. In this, his first memoir, le Carré is as funny as he is incisive - reading into the events he witnesses the same moral ambiguity with which he imbues his novels. Whether he's interviewing a German terrorist in her desert prison or watching Alec Guinness preparing for his role as George Smiley, this book invites us to think anew about events and people we believed we understood. Best of all, le Carré gives us a glimpse of a writer's journey over more than six decades, and his own hunt for the human spark that has given so much life and heart to his fictional characters." With an Appendix. To which are added, Letters to Dr. Clarke concerning liberty and necessity; From a Gentleman of the University of Cambridge: With the Doctor's Answers to them. Also Remarks upon a Book, Entitled, A Philosophical Enquiry Concerning Human Liberty.

First Edition. 8vo., xiij, (3, ad to reader & errata), 416, 46, (2, pub. ad) pp. Bound in contemporary panelled calf, rebacked preserving old spine, new morocco spine label. Published by J. Knapton (London) , 1717.

Some very minimal rubbing to the binding, otherwise a fine example.

This work provides important papers on the implications of Newton's ideas on mechanics. Dr. Clarke defended Newton against Leibnitz's accusations of atheism. (Babson 229.) "Clarke's most direct contribution to physics during the course of this correspondence came in a footnote to his fifth paper, in which he considered the problem of computing the force of a moving body." (D.S.B.).

Description:
An Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) by Samuel Clemens regarding his nephew Samuel E. Moffett (1860–1908), with fascinating personal content and notable associations, to Colonel George Brinton McClellan Harvey (1864-1928).
ALS. 2pp. in black ink on a folded sheet of notepaper, dated Feb. 22 with no year present, but circa 1899 (the year that Colonel Harvey acquired the North American Review) to 1908 (the year of Samuel Moffett's death), 11.4cm*14.5cm, near fine.
The letter reads as follows:
"Dear Col. Harvey,
I asked my nephew, Samuel Moffett, some time ago to write something for the North American & I promised to submit it to you & see if you wanted it.
The subject is all right - it is the question which is working its way to the front now - & I am partial enough to think it is a good paper. But you are the final court.
Of course I wish Aldrich would consent, for what he says is grand praise & comes from an authority; but I am afraid to ask him. If I had arrived at it through someone else I should not… Read More

Description:
Second and Expanded Edition; "forte correcte" according to Roesch. 8vo (148 x 88mm.), Collation: A-K8 L4 (but lacking blank leaf L4). Bound in 18th century tan morocco, raised bands, gilt to spine, marbled endpapers, all edges sprinkled in red. Published by Leuven, (Reyner Velpius for) Martin Rotarius, 1551. A clean example in a pleasing binding; a little bowed and a touch of rubbing, otherwise fine. This work comprises of reports and letters sent home from Morocco by Nicolas Cleynaerts/Clenardus of Louvain (1493-1542), one of the earliest Orientalists and Arabic scholars of Western Europe. He visited Spain, Morocco and Portugal during the final years of his life, sending Latin letters "dated variously from 1535 to 1541" (Weber) to his friends back home in Belgium. To perfect his knowledge of Arabic literature he spent two years at Fez; he was then deported by the Moors for Christian propaganda (he had begun to translate the Bible into Arabic) and died at Granada in Spain, the last great bastion of… Read More

Description:
First Edition, Limited First Issue, one of 75 copies. 8vo., Publisher's printed wrappers, stappled, pp. 14. Printed for private circulation by H. J. Goulden, Limited (Canterbury), 1922.
Some toning to the printed wrappers, the rear cover faded, the staples a little rusted. A very good copy of the rare first issue.
The First Issue was printed without the half-title or title pages; these were added to the second printing at Conrad's request (Cagle A56a.) This work pays tribute to the Dover Patrol, who protected the coasts of Britain for British troops during WW1. Although "no figure of rhetoric can render justice to the quiet resolution of men making up for the inadequacy of [their] means," Conrad writes a great tribute to the Dover Patrol. (Keating 221; Cagle A56b.)
