An intriguing premise informs Carr's memoir of drug addiction—he went back to his hometown of Minneapolis and interviewed the friends, lovers and family members who witnessed his downfall. A successful, albeit hard-partying, journalist, Carr developed a taste for coke that led him to smoke and shoot the drug. At the height of his use in the late 1980s, his similarly addicted girlfriend gave birth to twin daughters. Carr, now a New York Times columnist, gives both the lowlights of his addiction (the fights, binges and arrests) as well as the painstaking reconstruction of his life. Soon after he quit drugs, he was thrown for another loop when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Unfortunately, the book is less a real investigation of his life than an anecdotal chronicle of wild behavior. This is a nice anthology of three good science fiction novellas with religious themes. The Feast of St. Dionysus by Robert Silverberg is a somewhat metaphysical survivors' guilt tale with an unsatisfying ending. My Brother Leopold by Edgar Pangborn is a good post-apocalyptic story with an interesting twist and clever insight. My favorite is the Roger Zelazny novella, 'Kjwalll'kje'k'koothailll'kje'k, a title which is difficult to type and I'll bet no one has ever managed to pronounce it correctly three times in a row rapidly, with or without ice cubes in their mouth. It's a religious dolphin story and a very well done private-eye mystery; a very memorable and thought-provoking story and not just because of the title.

Another superb novel from Michael Collins, who is surely earning a place as one of America's great contemporary writers. Although the central motif is a missing child & a possible crime, the quality of the prose, & structure of the narrative mean that it is first & foremost a literary novel. As with his previous book, The Keepers of the Truth, he examines particular aspects of the state of America through the medium of an enthralling story. But beyond this framework the books are quite dissimilar, each fresh, original & thought provoking in its own way. I slightly preferred The Keepers of Truth, perhaps as having more gravitas, but each is a great read & worthy of 5 stars.
