Description:
Five hundred years ago, Johannes Gutenberg discovered the art of libriomancy, allowing him to reach into books to create things from their pages. Gutenberg's power brought him many enemies, and some of those enemies have waited centuries for revenge. Revenge which begins with the brutal slaughter of a wendigo in the northern Michigan town of Tamarack, a long-established werewolf territory.
Libriomancer Isaac Vainio is part of Die Zwelf Portenære, better known as the Porters, the organization founded by Gutenberg to protect the world from magical threats. Isaac is called in to investigate the killing, along with Porter psychiatrist Nidhi Shah and their dryad bodyguard and lover, Lena Greenwood. Born decades ago from the pages of a pulp fantasy novel, Lena was created to be the ultimate fantasy woman, strong and deadly, but shaped by the needs and desires of her companions. Her powers are unique, and Gutenberg's enemies hope to use those powers for themselves. But their plan could unleash a far darker evil…

Description:
An intriguing premise informs Carr's memoir of drug addiction—he went back to his hometown of Minneapolis and interviewed the friends, lovers and family members who witnessed his downfall. A successful, albeit hard-partying, journalist, Carr developed a taste for coke that led him to smoke and shoot the drug. At the height of his use in the late 1980s, his similarly addicted girlfriend gave birth to twin daughters. Carr, now a New York Times columnist, gives both the lowlights of his addiction (the fights, binges and arrests) as well as the painstaking reconstruction of his life. Soon after he quit drugs, he was thrown for another loop when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Unfortunately, the book is less a real investigation of his life than an anecdotal chronicle of wild behavior. What's more, his clinical approach (he videotaped all his interviews), meant to create context, sometimes distances readers from it. By turns self-consciously prurient and intentionally vague,

Description:
This is a nice anthology of three good science fiction novellas with religious themes. The Feast of St. Dionysus by Robert Silverberg is a somewhat metaphysical survivors' guilt tale with an unsatisfying ending. My Brother Leopold by Edgar Pangborn is a good post-apocalyptic story with an interesting twist and clever insight. My favorite is the Roger Zelazny novella, 'Kjwalll'kje'k'koothailll'kje'k, a title which is difficult to type and I'll bet no one has ever managed to pronounce it correctly three times in a row rapidly, with or without ice cubes in their mouth. It's a religious dolphin story and a very well done private-eye mystery; a very memorable and thought-provoking story and not just because of the title.

Description:
Lydia McKenzie is an artist whose medium is the camera. She's having her first one-woman show. It is a series that ties to actual murders committed in the city's past. Her method is to find a model—someone who can match in a general way the actual female victim—and pose her in the clothes and position in which the actual victim was found. The night of her showing, however, is disappointing; the owner of the gallery makes her pay for the invitations down to the stamps, hang the whole show herself, and rush for the usual wine and snacks. But what happens next is much worse: two plainclothes policemen shut down the event and take Lydia in for questioning. A young woman whom she knew well, and who was the model in one of her photographs, has been murdered. Worried that the police aren't doing what they should, Lydia and another friend set out to find the killer.

Description:
A brilliant portrait of a beloved and controversialfigure in twentieth-century spirituality.
Simone Weil (1906-1943) was a writer and philosopher who devoted her life to a search for God―while avoiding membership in organized religion. She wrote with the clarity of a brilliant mind educated in the best French schools, the social conscience of a grass-roots labor organizer, and the certainty and humility of a mystic―and she persistently carried out her search in the company of the poor and oppressed.
Robert Coles's study of this strange and compelling figure includes the details of her short, eventful life: her academic career, her teaching, her political and social activism, and her mystical experiences. Coles also analyzes the major themes her life encompassed: her politics, her Jewish identity, her moral concerns, her intellect, and her experience of grace. This is the best, most accessible introduction to the woman who was a spiritual influence on the life and work of so many, among them T. S.… Read More

Description:
Another superb novel from Michael Collins, who is surely earning a place as one of America's great contemporary writers. Although the central motif is a missing child & a possible crime, the quality of the prose, & structure of the narrative mean that it is first & foremost a literary novel. As with his previous book, The Keepers of the Truth, he examines particular aspects of the state of America through the medium of an enthralling story. But beyond this framework the books are quite dissimilar, each fresh, original & thought provoking in its own way. I slightly preferred The Keepers of Truth, perhaps as having more gravitas, but each is a great read & worthy of 5 stars.

Description:
From an acclaimed Booker Prize Nominee comes a riveting and haunting tale of a novelist whose last hope for fame may be the darkest secret in his past.
For E. Robert Pendleton, a professor clinging to tenure and living in the shambles of his once-bright literary career, death seems to be the only remaining option. But his suicide attempt fails, and during his long convalescence, a novel is discovered hidden in his basement: a brilliant, semi-autobiographical story with a gruesome child-murder at its core.
The publication of Scream causes a storm of publicity, conferring the success Pendleton has always sought, but, ironically, he is no longer in a condition to appreciate it. Soon questions begin to be asked about its content: in particular about the uncanny resemblance between Pendleton's fictional crime and a real-life, unresolved local murder. Enter Jon Ryder, a world-weary detective, and the hunt for the murderer is on. A profound, darkly funny novel with a gripping thriller at its core, Death of a… Read More
