Les Livres de Hogg is a French translation by Robert Marteau of the Hogg Poems and Drawings by Canadian poet Barry Callaghan. Callaghan has been a unique and innovative figure in the Canadian poetry scene, and his Hogg poems are a standout example of his work. John Montague described the work as "...a compost heap of suffering and acceptance for all sad children to play with" and this translation makes this remarkable work available to a wider audience.

Description:
Little Hands and God's Book was published in 1904 to celebrate the centenary of the British and Foreign Bible Society which was a charitable organisation founded in 1804 to facilitate access to the Bible around the world in a variety of languages. Written by children's author Wiliam Canton, this history of the society was directed at a younger audience, and includes many images documenting the missionary work undertaken by the society around the world.
This volume is in Fair condition. There is significant staining and wear to the cloth covering the boards and significant foxing, particularly to the flyleaves. The front flyleaf also bears the name of a previous owner. The front hinge has a slight crack, but otherwise the binding is tight and the images and text are all legible.

Description:
This small volume by Raymond Card (1893-1969) is an historical account not only of the history of the Ontario Association of Architects, but also of the history of architecture as a profession in general. Card began his career as an architect, before becoming a playwright. He wrote historical plays especially, many of which were presented at the Hart House Theatre at the University of Toronto. He was also regional Director of the National Housing Corporation and later Regional Architect to Central Mortgage Housing Corp. in Toronto.
This volume has an interesting provenance, as well, having belonged to D.G.W. McRae, as indicated by his name and address written on the front flyleaf. Author of The Arts and Crafts of Canada, he was one of the early instructors at what would go on to be the Ryerson Institute of Technology, intended to provide vocational training for soldiers returning from the Second World War. This institution would go on to become Ryerson University, now Toronto Metropolitan University.… Read More

Description:
A beautiful little edition of Thomas Carlyle's Sartor Resartus, a satirical work presented as a philosophical discourse on the meaning and significance of clothes.
The publisher, the Henry Altemus Company, produced various series of reprints of classic works, each run of which was distinguished by a different beautiful cover. This particular cover is from the third numbering of the Petit Trianon series published from 1899 to 1910.
The book shows some wear to the edges of the boards and particularly to the top and bottom of the spine. The poor condition arises from four pages, including the title page, an illustration, and the table of contents having separated from the binding. Despite these defects, the volume still presents a beautiful appearance, and would be a welcome edition to bring character to one's collection.

Description:
A New Path to the Waterfall was the eleventh collection of poetry by Raymond Carver, the respected American writer of poetry and short fiction. Completed shortly before his death, it includes many poems that had not been previously published. His approaching death seems to have inspired a reflection on life that is presented in the fifty poems contained in this work. Including an introduction by Tess Gallagher, Carver's companion and ultimately wife to whom the poems are dedicated, this work is a poetic summary of the life and work of a great American writer.

Description:
Not to be confused with the British wartime prime minister, the author of this novel is the American writer Winston Churchill (1871-1947). While his most popular works were those of historical fiction set during the American Revolutionary and Civil wars, The Inside of the Cup reflects the tenor of his later works, which focussed on social, political, and religious themes. Originally serialised in Hearst Magazine beginning in 1912, the story has a significant moralising and religious tone intended not merely to entertain but also to instruct readers in the tenants of a form of social Christianity. This volume is missing its dust jacket, but is in Good condition. There is some discolouration to the fabric on the spine, as well as some wear and minor bumping to the corners. There is an old library sticker on the spine. Internally, the front hinge is slightly cracked. Description:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Read More

The Prince and the Pauper, which tells of Prince Edward Tudor of Wales and the pauper Tom Canty, whose uncanny resemblance allows they to switch places and learn about each others lives, was the first foray into historical fiction for Mark Twain. It also served as a vehicle for commentary on social injustice.

Description:
Ralph Connor is the pseudonym of Charles William Gordon (1860-1937), a significant figure in the history of Canadian literature. He is notable as being Canada's first best-selling author, achieving great success with his novels set on the frontiers. Having become a Presbyterian Minister, he was the chaplain for the 43rd Cameron Highlanders during the First World War, and would go on to become the senior Protestant chaplain for the entire Canadian Forces. He was also integral to the creation of the United Church of Canada. Connor's religious beliefs greatly informed his writing.
The Rock and the River: A Romance of Quebec differs from his earlier works in terms of subject matter and is an example of his forays into historical fiction. The novel is set during the War of 1812 and gives an account of the conflict from the perspective of Lower Canada. This volume may be described as being in Very Good condition, and it retains the dust jacket which is in Fair condition, with wear to the edges and spine.… Read More

Description:
The playwright John Coulter was born in Belfast in 1888. His first plays were produced in Dublin and London, and he began to write for the BBC in the 1920s. In 1936 he moved to Toronto where he remained, and helped to found the Canada Council and the Stratford Festival.
This volume contains two of his best comic plays, which invoke the unique character of his Irish origins.
The House in the Quiet Glen was originally called Sally's Choice and was his first professionally produced play for the BBC in 1925. It was renamed, and went on to great success at the Canadian Dominion Drama Festival in 1937. Based on local stories told to him in the mountains of the Clogher Valley, Ireland, much of its dialogue was recorded verbatim by him, and communicates the unique colour of the local mixture of Gaelic and English.
The Family Portrait was written as a sequel to The House in the Quiet Glen, and was produced by BBC Radio in 1935.
