Omaha: Herald Printing House, 1883. Very good.. 16pp. Original blue pictorial wrappers. Light soiling and wear. A scarce promotional pamphlet on the dairy industry in Nebraska, providing "a sketch of the creameries of the State...to show the profitable working of the system to the manufacturer, and the demand for an increase of butter and cheese factories." Published by the Land Department of the Union Pacific Railway, this work was intended to promote the sale of lands in the state, while providing information on a number of specific dairies. It is illustrated with several handsome images of cows, as well as a view of the Nebraska Creamery in Fremont. Scarce, with copies located at the Denver Public Library and the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Des Moines: Kenyon Company, 1920. Very good.. Folding map, 15.25 x 19.5 inches. Light wear and dust soiling to wraps. Very light, even tanning to map. Scarce, colorful folding map of North Dakota. The state counties are shaded in six different colors, with congressional districts outlined in red, and "Chief Auto Lines" delineated in green. The Kenyon Company, mapmakers based in Des Moines, issued several versions of this state map in the first quarter of the 20th century, all quite scarce. We locate copies of the present edition at South Dakota State and the Minnesota Historical Society.

[Minot?]: Fossum & Buck, 1915. Very good.. Panoramic photograph, approximately 6.5 x 14.25 inches. Photo captioned in the negative. Light wear at edges; small, light red ink patch near left edge. Light dust soiling. A striking panorama of a harvesting scene in Flaxton, North Dakota, taken in 1915 and published by the photography studio of Fossum & Buck. The photograph depicts six threshing machines at rest in the midst of a wide wheat field. A group of thirteen laborers pause their activities to stare dourly into the camera, some perched atop their threshers, others with bundles of wheat under their arms. The town of Flaxton, located in the north-central part of the state near the border with Canada, was small and isolated even by North Dakota standards in 1915, with a population approaching 350 residents; as of the 2010 census, the population was sixty-six. Denver: Clason Map Co, 1921. Very good.. 31,[1]pp. plus folding map, 20.75 x 27.75 inches. Original printed card covers, stapled. Light wear to covers. Text lightly toned, internally clean. "New Census Edition." Travel guide for North Dakota, providing brief history and overview for immigrants and travelers, as well as state and city maps, auto routes and distances, and railroads. There is also a commercial index of towns with hotels, industries, altitudes, and population details. The large folding map shows the state, criss-crossed by roads with counties outlined, and there is a single-page map of Fargo. We locate six copies in OCLC -- four of them in North Dakota libraries, as well as a copy in Germany, and one at Yale.

[Fargo, 1894. About very good.. [16] leaves with descriptive tissue guards. Oblong 12mo. Original grey printed wrappers, string-tied. Light wear and soiling to covers. First tissue guard lacking. Internally clean. A pictorial souvenir of the Agricultural College of North Dakota, which later became North Dakota State University. The school opened in January 1892 with 123 students enrolled. This booklet, then, showcases the progress made in the short years after the founding of the school. Images show the primary building, the biology lab, the chemistry lab, home economics classroom, the agricultural classroom with its collections of grains and seeds, and more. We locate two copies in OCLC, at the University of Illinois and North Dakota State University.

[Bismarck, N.D.], 1929. Very good.. Six issues (one duplicate), each 16pp. Pictorial self-wrappers, stapled. Vertical folds, minor wear. Light dust soiling and toning. Scarce periodical with all the news concerning highway construction during the late 1920s in The Peace Garden State. Present here are issues from December 1927, October-December 1928, and February 1929. Each contains articles on recent and ongoing construction, and a plethora of tables, maps, and photographs that chronicle the development of the state highway system in North Dakota. OCLC locates runs of this newsletter at the NYPL and four North Dakota institutions.

Aberdeen: Daily News Print, 1894. Very good.. [8]pp. on a folded sheet of pink paper. Minor wear, some light soiling to rear panel. Promotional brochure for South Dakota and the area around Aberdeen, the state's third most populous city. The "Big Five" Counties comprise Brown, Campbell, Edmunds, McPherson, and Walworth, sitting along the northeast part of the state, along the border with North Dakota. The work briefly touts the crop yields and fabulous soil quality, as well as stating that "Those seeking homes in this district will not be subject to pioneering," that hard work having already been accomplished in the district. The final panel is a map of the Upper Midwest showing the Chicago & Northwestern Railway lines, all of which lead to Aberdeen. We locate a single copy in OCLC, at Yale.

Aberdeen: S.W. Narregang, 1894. Very good.. Broadside, 10.5 x 5 inches. Old fold lines, minor wear. Broadside advertising real estate investment in the fertile farm country of Brown County, South Dakota as offered for sale by S.W. Narregang. In addition to having over a million acres of the finest farm land, Brown County has "5 roller flour mills, 26 post offices, 19 thrifty growing towns, 200 miles of operated railroads, 165 school houses, 17,000 population, 50 grain elevators." Narregang is offering 50,000 acres for sale priced $5 to $10 an acre at low interest. Brown County is located in the northeastern part of the state, on the border with North Dakota. We locate a single copy in OCLC, at Southern Methodist University.

[Pierre, 1933. Very good.. Folding pamphlet, 8.5 x 14 inches. "South Dakota wants real men and women to settle on her public lands.... Here is your ticket to freedom!" A scarce and wonderful promotional for South Dakota homesteads during the Great Depression, with a photographic image of a typical farm, and many entertaining platitudes concerning the glories of the state. Four copies in OCLC.

Chicago: Pettibone, Wells & Co, 1886. Very good.. 32pp., including three illustrations, plus double-sided folding map, 14 x 13.75 inches. Original red textured wrappers printed in gold, stapled. Some minor wear, light chipping to lower corner of rear cover. Internally clean. Promotional pamphlet advertising mortgages sold by the Dakota Loan and Trust Company. The first half is devoted to information about the company, its glowing reputation, and excellent rates. The second half provides information about Dakota and reasons for desiring to settle there, including excellent schools, burgeoning railroad development, and a healthful climate. The three illustrations show industrious and prosperous farmers at work. The map in the back is entitled "Map of South Dakota and Northern Nebraska Showing Territory Occupied by Dakota Loan and Trust Company", while on the verso is a "Map of the Northern States" which depicts the upper Midwest. We locate two copies in OCLC, at Yale and Trinity College.

Pierre, 1911. Good.. [18]pp. Original illustrated self-wrappers, stapled. Light wear and a few unrelated pencil annotation to wrappers. Small chip at foot of front wrapper. Light dust soiling and tanning. Rare promotional pamphlet for Pierre, South Dakota, and the surrounding region. This booklet contains numerous photographic reproductions that depict the architecture of Pierre at the beginning of the 20th century and the agricultural pursuits of the region, including a bird's-eye view of the town. The text discusses the "production of wealth unequalled" possible in South Dakota, and promotes opportunities in natural gas and oil in addition to a plethora of farming possibilities. Also with several testimonials of successful farmers and a section wonderfully titled, "A Plea for a More Manly Life, with South Dakota the Open Door." Not in OCLC.

Milwaukee: Burdick, Armitage & Allen, 1893. Very good.. 48pp. Original yellow printed wrappers. Minor wear and soiling. Internally clean. Work promoting lands in South Dakota along the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway. The work contains both testimonials and rosy facts about the healthfulness of the climate and its high suitability for farming and stockraising. Illustrated with half-tones depicting prosperous farms and harvests in the area. A "Special Notice" tipped into the front indicates that crop yields for 1893 are similar enough to 1891 that the publisher has issued another large run of the pamphlet to encourage anyone who wants to go west.

Aberdeen, S.D., 1907. Very good.. [162]pp., with numerous photographic reproductions. Oblong octavo. Original pictorial wrappers. Wraps with light wear and a few small chips. Scarce promotional for the town of Aberdeen, South Dakota, located in the northeastern corner of the state. Known as "the Hub City of the Dakotas," Aberdeen was a confluence of four railroad lines, which supported a burgeoning population and business boom. The town, its residences, businesses, railroads, artesian wells, and municipal buildings are all extensively illustrated, together with portraits of local officials. Today, only one railroad line travels through Aberdeen, but it remains the third most populous city in the state (population a whopping 28,000), after Pierre and Sioux Falls. We locate copies at New York Public, California State Library, SMU, and four more in South Dakota.

Fort Meade, S.D., 1895. Good plus.. [4]pp. Folio, on a folded sheet. Old folds, some separation and slight loss. A few small chips and tears at edges. "A weekly journal published in the interest of the members of the Eighth Regiment, U.S. Cavalry, every Monday at Headquarters of the Regiment, Fort Meade, S.D. by C.H. Whitehurst, to whom all communications should be addressed." A rare and ephemeral news sheet published at Fort Meade. The present issue contains a history of the regiment, national and local news items, other military news, and local advertisements. We locate no other issues -- unsurprising, given the limited circulation and rather poor quality of the paper.

[Fort Meade?], 1891. Very good.. [3]pp. on a folded quarto sheet. Light creasing and minor soiling. Roster of the non-commissioned officers of the Eighth Cavalry, listing name, rank, and date of appointment. The list is divided into sections by troop (A through K), as well as the Hospital Corps, Non-Commissioned Staff, and Regimental Non-Commissioned Officers. Each troop is comprised of ten men (one position is noted as "Vacancy"), with ten further men in the other three categories. The Eighth Cavalry was formed to fight in the Indian Wars on the frontier after the Civil War. Fort Meade was established in 1878 to protect the Black Hills after gold was discovered there and white settlers began to invade the area. Unrecorded and ephemeral -- we locate no copies in OCLC.

Original black cloth, manuscript label on cover. Light wear and soiling. Some images lightly faded; most captioned in ink. Postcards a bit worn and soiled. A short but interesting album of photographs documenting life on the rural South Dakota prairie in 1904. A later caption reveals a bit of the backstory for the album: "Edward Merritt and ranch in S.D. when he and Rev. E.C. Smith had a week's vacation, 1904. Carson's Ranch," and the first images in the album are of Carson's Ranch, located about eight miles from Bradley, South Dakota. Photos include shots of the house, the family, outbuildings, and agricultural work. One photo shows two wagons back to back on an open prairie, one of them stuck in a rut. Placerville, Ca, 1929. Very good.. Five blueprints, measuring from approximately 24 x 34 to 29 x 41 inches. Tipped onto modern cardboard backing at left edge, overlaid with brown paper. Light wear, a couple of archival repairs at edges. Contemporary blind stamps. A group five large and fascinating blueprints that delineate proposed modifications to the Weber Dam near Placerville, California, that were carried out in 1930. The Dam was originally built in 1922 and 1923 without steel reinforcement, and as a result improvements have been required periodically from its completion up to the present day. The designs present here outline the first set of such improvements, overseen by an engineer named George W. Hawley in 1929 and 1930. These include the construction of new tunnels, outlets, gates, and spillways, and also include detailed topographical charts of the area surrounding the dam. A seemingly unique collection of images in Missouri and Arkansas along the Kansas City, Pittsburgh & Gulf Railroad, taken by the company's official photographer, E.J. Davison. The Kansas City, Pittsburgh & Gulf Railroad began in the 1890s and ran from Kansas City, south through Missouri, Arkansas, far-western Louisiana, and terminated at Port Arthur, Texas. Minor wear to edges, rubbing to boards. A few gatherings a bit shaken, light occasional foxing. The first Mexican edition of a scarce work originally published in Spain in 1702. The work, centered on God and the Holy Trinity, emanates from the pen of a Capuchin from Seville - hence his religious name. Feliciano de Sevilla served as a missionary in Andalucia and not, as was once thought, as a missionary in Mexico. The volume concludes with a "Corona Florida a la Santisima Trinidad," a small literary collection of coplas, canciones, and a romance "en Metafora del Sol, que discurre por los doce signos del Zodiaco."
