First American edition, first printing, first issue with two quotes/reviews opposite the title page. Near fine condition. 432 pp. Bound in publisher's green pebbled cloth decorated in blind, titles in gilt on the spine, original coated brown endpapers, folding chart intact. A Near Fine copy. Light rubbing to cloth at corners/tips. Light foxing and occasional offsetting to contents. Small tear at rear endpaper. Text is unaffected. No other interior marks (bar owner's name in pencil, remained for potential provenance). An immensely influential work, considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology, in which Darwin postulates that species evolve over the course of generations through natural selection.
