FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. His presentation inscription begins on the front free endpaper: "For Eva McKenna, with the compliments and affection of the Author." It is continued on the half-title: "-- but this is not `the sequel to the Phoenix and the Mirror,' though it will form with it parts of the trinity of trilogies, The Ennead entitled `Vergil Magnus;' and may we both live to see it. Description:
Philadelphia: James K. Simon, 1851. 12mo. 538 pages, plus six hand-colored plates, including frontispiece. Original embossed blue cloth with gilt lettering and decorations on spine. [17.6 cm.] Good plus. A little wear to extremities. Early gift inscription on front free endpaper. Offsetting to title page. Occasional, mostly marginal stains, affecting the text in a few places without impact on legibility. Later edition; probably the second by Simon, who previously issued the work in a smaller format and with two fewer plates in 1844. Description:
New York: Dix, Edwards, & Co., 1856. 12mo. [viii], 285 pages plus [8] pages publisher's ads at rear dated Sept. 1, 1856. Original embossed dark purple cloth with gilt-stamped spine. [18.5 cm.] Spine sun-faded and with shallow chips to ends, light spotting to cloth, wear to corners with small areas of the boards showing. Light scattered foxing. Good plus. FIRST EDITION. The author's second book. Scarce in the trade. A sometimes humorous account of De Forest's travels in Ottoman Syria in the 1850's. Unlike many contemporary Western accounts of the Holy Land, the book emphasizes realistic descriptions of daily life, rather than observations of ancient relics, and the author is plainly critical of pilgrims and their reverence for sacred monuments. De Forest first visited Syria for health reasons in the 1840's and later returned to spend several years with his brother, a missionary. He includes descriptions of Smyrna, Rhodes, Beirut, Mount Lebanon, and Jerusalem.… Read More

Original brown cloth, stamped in gilt on spine, and with gilt and blind rules on covers; yellow-coated endpapers. [19.4 cm.] Good only. Head of spine chipped to headband; shallow chip to cloth at base of spine and exposed paper colored to match cloth; wear to hinges and corners; tiny hole to rear hinge; some faint spotting to boards. Early owner's lightly penciled inscription on front endpapers: "Annie H. Stephens, Baltimore, Sept. 27, 1863." Corner chip to front free endpaper. Moderate foxing to title. Perhaps two dozen other pages similarly affected; the rest with only light scattered foxing. Slight wrinkle to some leaves along gutters. Mesh starting to show between two leaves, but signatures holding well and binding otherwise sound. FIRST EDITION. London: G. Wilkie, J. Cuthell, J. Stockdale, [et al.], 1816. 8vo. Leaves 21 x 13 cm. [2], xxviii, 554 pages, plus frontispiece portrait of the author. Indexes to the text and the editor's footnotes. Contemporary quarter calf with raised bands and gilt spine decorations over marbled boards with calf tips. Light wear to extremities; rubbing and a few scuffs to boards; front joint very slightly started at the base, but the binding is solid. Marginal foxing to the frontispiece; title page a little tanned and with offsetting from the frontispiece; light scattered foxing throughout. Still, about very good. Later edition. Stated as "A New Edition, with supplemental notes, and a preface biographical and critical," but probably the third edition thus, the first such having been published in 1807 soon after de Lolme's death. The work originally appeared in French in 1771 with an edition in English following in 1775. A landmark study of the English constitution. Well-received in Britain and on… Read More
