Description:
Written on two sides of a 25 by 20 cm sheet of an unruled double-sheet self-mailer. Folded for mailing; remnant of wax seal, with minor loss from opening. Hand-rated, with strong black and weak red postmarks. Very good. An interesting letter discussing changes to be made to plates engraved by the Perkins firm for use by the Plymouth Bank, specifically discussing counterfeiting and the use of engraving technology to thwart it: "Enclosed we return the pattern of our £1 note, with which we are well pleased, but we accept your offer of guaranteeing us from forgery upon condition of your further decorating the plate..." This sort of correspondence is rarely seen. Ex Heather Hardin-Hudson Library.
