London: Raphael Tuck & Sons, [c. 1910-1913]. Loose_leaf. Near Fine. 3 x 4 3/4 inches. Inscription dated Easter 1913 on reverse. Raphael Tuck & Sons was one of the most prestigious and prolific early postcard publishing companies. Although the Tuck firm did some black and white printing in their London offices, the majority of color work was contracted for in Germany, as is evidenced by the printed (or chromographed) in Bavaria, Germany or Saxony inscribed on the majority of the early Tuck works. Raphael moved to England from Prussia in 1865 to set up in business selling picture frames from a small shop. By 1870 his sons (including Raphael) were working for him as the business moved its focus to the import and publication of printed paper products. By 1881 Raphael had retired. Bound in 3/4 black calf with marbled boards and matching marbled endpapers. Author, title and date in gilt lettering to spine. Corners and edges very lightly worn. Provenance: bookplate dated 1893 of Henry Blackwell and binder's stamp on ffep "Bound by Blackwell. A very nice copy of this scarce Welsh volume which was bound and owned by the noted New York bookbinder responsible for the bindings of several volumes belonging to John Augustin Daly, the Victorian American theatre manager, playright and bibliophile, which were sold at auction after his death.
