French was Northern born, graduate of West Point, and had an early army career as an artillerist. He was chosen early in the War for a general's position where he served until 1863 as essentially a regional commander on the Eastern seaboard. I have seen this book in different color bindings - maroon, blue, and gray. This one is gray.

Not unusual, the legislature convened a committee to "evaluate" the actions of General Buell while in command of the Army of the Ohio.
