Contemporary diced calf, the spine with wide flat bands. Gilt in panels. Some loss to the spine but still an attractive copy. Internally clean and tight with the protective tissues still in place over the plates.

Fallowfield was one of several experimenters in the 1720s who were looking for a method of producing high quality iron and steel without the use of charcoal as fuel. His patent was granted in 1727. Their work was superseded by the introduction of blast furnaces fuelled with coke. ESTC T20618 located at BL, Columbia Univ., and California State Library only.

Old free endpaper preserved with the early signature of Mary Ann Taylor and a previous owner's name crossed through.

The marbled boards rubbed on the edges and corners. The text leaves with different amounts of spotting due to the poor quality paper. Fearon (1793-1842) described himself as a wine merchant in his will. He was sent by thirty-nine English families to the United States in 1817 to ascertain what part of this country, if any, would be suitable for their residence. He gave an account of his experiences in this publication. Sydney Smith, in a review of this book, said that its author was "no lover of America, and a little given to exaggerate in his views of vices and prejudices."

Some light browning of the paper, otherwise a very good copy. Ferguson's work was extremely popular and was reprinted many times in octavo. Later editions were expanded by an Appendix with a further thirteen plates. The first edition is scarce

Spine with raised bands and a contrasting lettering piece. A few plates show evidence of old mis-folding, otherwise a very good copy.

This appears to be a remainder issue of the historical section of Fielding's book without the section on flora and fauna. It is obviously the original sheets and bound with similar cloth and blocking as the full edition. Slight bump to corners. Author's presentation inscription dated 1915 on front endpaper.
