First edition of this collection of three half-hour comedies by the creators of Steptoe and Son and Hancock's Half Hour, first broadcast in the TV series Galton and Simpson's Comedy Playhouse of the early 1960s. A fine copy.

SOUND ENGINEER'S STUDIO COPY, HEAVILY ANNOTATED FOR USE DURING RECORDING. In the summer of 1952, Calling All Forces became Forces All Star Bill, '...presenting the best of Britain's showbusiness for our Armed Forces serving overseas'. This was the second episode of the new incarnation, which featured a different compere every week. (This week's was Bernard Braden). The show was transmitted on 11 August 1952, and as well as the ever-present Graham Stark and Fred Yule, featured Lizbeth Webb, Lee Lawrence and Freddy Randall among the guest stars. A very early Galton and Simpson script dating from the first year of their career, heavily marked up for use during the recording of the show itself.

First edition, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO TITLE PAGE: 'With best wishes, yours, John Gardner'. Gardner's first continuation Bond novel -- he eventually wrote fourteen. An excellent copy.

First UK separate edition. First published as part of a larger work in Village Voice in the US, and in Peace News in the UK, both in 1966.

Spine rebacked and dulled, contemporary bookplate to front pastedown. A very well preserved copy. Seventh edition. Gisborne's book was first published in 1797 -- the year Mary Wollstonecroft died, and five years after the publication of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. An Enquiry Into the Duties of the Female Sex went through eight corrected editions in the ten years following its publication, and was a significant contribution to the public conversation of the time. Gisborne [1758-1846] was an Anglican priest, and his advice to women was coloured accordingly -- their subordination to men was innate and God-given, for example. But he was no hypocrite. His An Enquiry Into the Duties of Men had appeared three years earlier and, as a central member of the abolitionist Clapham Sect, he knew and preached that slavery was incompatible with biblical… Read More

Scarce in any sort of dustwrapper -- and a copy which has survived far better than the reputation of its author, who has now been comprehensively forgotten. COPAC's listing of Glyder's work shows him to have been active between 1928 and 1949 (making it likely that this was his last book), and two films were made from his novels: The Compulsory Husband [1930] and The Compulsory Wife [1937]. Apart from that, nothing: Glyder's name does not seem to have troubled the scorers in any of the standard reference works.

Photographic frontispiece of author by Albert Cracknell, seven illustrations through text. Illustrated dustwrapper by Len Lye. First edition, first issue, with the Sassoon poem on pp. 341-3 present. Viscount Esher's copy, with his bookplate. Sassoon's poem is missing from later copies; complaints and the threat of legal action from the poet resulted in its removal.
