Though not stated, we assume this is a first edition as we have found other copies but not any earlier ones. Considerable wear to the original cover, including including fading, chipping and small tears at edges and spine. Spine is wear but no splits detected. Pages are in better condition. They are whole - none are missing, no tears, relatively little spotting or foxing. Except for the steel engravings scattered throughout the book. These are heavily foxed. Pages are clean and easy to read. Print is a bit larger than normal size. The first dozen pages or so are stained around the bottom front edge of the page. Writing on the first fly-leaf page Book draws primarily from the journal of Robert H. Kellogg, describing his life in a Confederate prison, as well as from other accounts by other prisoners in other Confederate prisons.

Well known and lessor known poets included. Cover is in fair condition with tears along top and bottom of spine. Pages have light foxing throughout. Text is clearly readable throughout. Publication page states book was entered into Library of congress in 1840

Very Good. First American edition. In excellent condtion. Tight binding despite a split visible at the top area between the inside front cover and adjacent fly leaf page which is loose.. Cover has some fading and soiling, but otherwise in excellent condtion. Pages are clean and clear, no tears or folds. However, we did see some spots on pages 62 and 63. We did not see any other marked pages. There is a commerative book plate on the inside cover.

From the Watts History of the United States Navy series. The author describes the building of a modern navy, "second to none" from the sorry state it was in post Civil War.The book is in pristine condition. Only some minute shelf wear. The unclipped Dj , in a Plasti-Kleer cover, has some small chipping and small tear along the top edge and wear along the bottom spine.
