[San Francisco]: B.F. Sterett, 1864. Very good.. 101pp. Original printed wrappers. Light vertical crease. Light chipping to spine ends and corners, light foxing and soiling. Contemporary ownership inscription on rear cover. A few pencil notes to text. Legal argument by a future governor of California in an important case relating to the paper currency issued during the Civil War, which could be used in place of gold. The case revolves around $450 for rent of a store building, owed by William Faulkner to James Lick, which he paid in greenbacks. Lick refused to accept the payment, and in the subsequent legal proceedings the constitutionality of the Legal Tender Act was brought into question. The California Supreme Court upheld the Act, and greenbacks, then worth about 60 cents on the dollar in San Francisco, could legally be used in place of gold coins. This was one of the earliest court decisions in the U.S. on the parity of paper money and gold coins.

An eccentric, but completely absorbing U.S. Spanish-language imprint, which aspires to teach an American style of penmanship to a Spanish-speaking audience. The author, George Washington Halsey, spent three years in Cuba in the 1830s teaching handwriting and drawing. This book grew out of that experience and his belief that the American style of writing was superior to other styles current in the 1830s. Following the introduction, fourteen leaves of printed text provide instruction and directions for various exercises. An acerbic memoir by Japanese author Toichiro Harada, memorializing his stay in New York City in the early-1910s. The main thrust of Harada's memoir to modern audiences is his dissatisfaction with the people, the crowds, and the culture of the Big Apple, manifested most acutely in his animosity towards the women of New York. In her work, Women on the Verge: Japanese Women, Western Dreams, Karen Kelsky states that "Harada's memoirs treat women as the objects of a kind of sexual rage." A rare circular focused on the education of Native American youth in the early years of the Yankton Agency in the Dakota Territory. The work was written by William Hobart Hare (1838-1909), who oversaw the Christian schools among the Native Americans at Yankton, from Dakota in January 1874, and was issued by the Office of the Indian Commission of the Protestant Episcopal Church in New York. Headlined "The Church and the Indians," this series of circulars began with the present issue and ran through 1877. In the present work, Hare acknowledges the "many Christian people for the interest which they have shown in the Boarding-School work," and then lays out the "general plan of the school work." Banff, 1920. Very good.. Nineteen real photo postcards, each captioned in the negative. One with writing on the image, minor wear and soiling else. A few with notes on the verso. A wonderful collection of real photo postcards documenting the Stoney Nakoda Indians at Banff Indian Days, taken by noted photographer Byron Harmon. Harmon (1876-1942) started his career as a portrait photographer in Tacoma in the 1890s, subsequently working as an itinerant photographer across the Southwest and eastern seaboard. An asthmatic from a young age, he relished the clear air of the mountain climate, and on a trip in the Canadian Rockies learned there was no photography studio yet established in Banff. He returned in 1906 and set up shop, operating as a photographer and druggist from 1906 to 1925. Most of Harmon's extensive output is dedicated to mountain scenery and tourism photography. An informative group of eight extremely scarce or unrecorded pieces promoting the presidential campaign of Ohio Governor, and former U.S. Attorney General, Judson Harmon in 1912. Harmon eventually lost out to Woodrow Wilson at the Democratic National Convention. The most substantial piece, a twelve-page pamphlet concerning Harmon's "presidential timber," located only at the Ohio History Center, lavishes praise upon his character and provides a lengthy discussion and defense of his legislative record as Governor. The remaining pieces are not recorded by OCLC, and include an endorsement from the late mayor of Cleveland, Tom L. Johnson, a broadside comparing Harmon's record with Wilson's, a four-page endorsement by Charles H. A fascinating annotated vernacular photo album documenting the personal adventures and service of an unnamed woman working with the Y.W.C.A. in Hawaii in the early 1930s. The photographs are a mixture of group portraits and action shots capturing the activities of the young women at various Y.W.C.A. camps, along with more personal photographs of the compiler in numerous locations in Hawaii and at home. Harmony, Mn, 1907. Very good plus.. 46pp. 12mo. Original green printed wrappers. Minor fading, small ink stamp on rear cover and inside of front cover. Internally clean. "The reason why I undertook / To write this little book, / Is, because I've found so many / unpleasant things sealed / That must be revealed." The author goes on to castigate the government, politicians, and evil-doers in general with poems such as "If Our Political Cranks Were Out of Date," Attorney's at Law," "Tax Dodgers," "The Present Generation," and "Satan's Errand Boy." The town of Harmony had a population of about 500 people at the turn of the century, making this a particularly obscure imprint. We locate only an internet record in OCLC.

Commemorative volume published on the occasion of the author's coronation as The Poet Laureate of Freemasonry, handsomely printed and illustrated. The work contains three poems, "Poem at Laureation," "Chicago," and "Laurel Crown That Camest to Me." Each poem begins with a gilt capital, with other Freemasonry symbols printed in gilt in the book, as well as a chromolithographic illustration of the "Jewel of 33o" presented to Hempstead by the Scottish Rite Bodies of the Valley of Little Rock when he was crowned Poet Laureate of Freemasonry. An elaborate production. We locate six copies in OCLC.

Dayton, Oh, 1851. About very good.. 143,[2]pp. 12mo. Original drab printed wrappers. Light chipping and wear. Text lightly foxed. Fourth edition of this German-American work of songs, the title of which translates loosely as, "A Short Pastime, Consisting of a Few Songs, Useful in Ethics." The title page has a woodcut of two women with a child and a dog, and the text is comprised of verse. We locate fewer than ten copies in OCLC.

Front wrapper detached, rear wrapper partially perished. Light even toning to text, small stain to bottom margin of first leaf, tiny hole in last two leaves costing just a few letters, bottom corner of final text leaf chipped with no loss. A properly rare Mexican provincial printing of the historic Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo printed in Guadalajara in July 1848. An attractive, color-printed map of the state highway system in Texas as it was in 1937, with eleven inset maps of the major arteries into and around the state's principal cities. The reverse comprises a photographic collage of scenes and attractions in towns and along highways across the state. "The [highway] department devised the first statewide marking system in the 1920s, and in 1929 it placed state and federal route signs including mileages and directions on designated highways in Texas. That same year Texas had 18,728 miles of main highways, 9,271 miles of which was hard-surfaced. The period of the 1930s was marked by the Great Depression and the efforts of the department to provide employment through road construction.... A good group of scarce auction and sales catalogs for the Palo Alto Stock Farm, Leland Stanford's horse breeding operation, at the turn of the 20th century. Stanford purchased 650 acres of the Rancho San Francisquito in 1876, out of which he began to develop his horse farm, buying a further 8000 acres of adjoining properties before his death in 1893. The land eventually became part of Stanford University, and the sales documented by the present pamphlets helped to sustain the institution while beneficiaries, the government, and other interested parties wrangled over Stanford's estate during the decade following his death. Second American edition of this scarce account of one of the most tragic incidents in colonial New York, which unfortunately echoed the Salem Witch Trials some fifty years earlier. In 1741, New York had a population of about 12,000, of which approximately one-sixth were enslaved African Americans. The city was also populated with a considerable number of poor white residents. After a series of over a dozen fires broke out in the city, an African American slave was seen fleeing one of the later conflagrations.
