Description:
Eureka, CA: Daily Humboldt Standard, 1890. First Edition. Good. The most detailed 19th century directory of Humboldt County, a remote region in far northwest California that at the time was only reachable by ship. This is also one of the only Western directories compiled and published by a woman. The first 126 pages are mostly devoted to the history of the county (with many advertisements from local businesses), then follows a directory of business owners by last name and then a classified listing of business by type. There is an index to the advertisers at the front and a biographical section devoted to leading business owners and important businesses at the end. Hamm also includes railroad schedules, navigation information, mail delivery routes, and telegraph offices. The advertisements are particularly detailed and many are full-page, taking advantage of the large format of the directory to include illustrations and detailed descriptions of products. In 1885, Humboldt County's white residents… Read More

Description:
London: Privately Printed [Boriswood], 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. A novel, set in Ireland, about a teenager, Sheila Moynihan, who leaves home because her brothers are molesting her, only to have to fight off an attempted rape, and to suffer further molestation by a series of priests she turns to for help. A rather grim picture of sexual violence in the 1930s. Due to the subject matter, the book was published in an edition of 110 copies for private circulation. This book was written while Hanley's earlier novel, Boy, about a young sailor who meets a similar fate to Sheila on a merchant ship, was prosecuted in England for obscenity. Resurrexit Dominus has never been reprinted. 320 pages. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good acetate dust jacket. Lacking the slipcase. Signed by Hanley on the limitation page. This is Hanley's own copy of the book, with extensive revisions marked in pencil, sanitizing the book to make it more palatable to the official… Read More

Description:
New York: Viking Press, 1976. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. A signed copy of Harrison's third novel, here in the correct first printing with 5-inch wide brown paper on the boards. [viii], 160 pages. First edition (first printing, with the brown paper covering the boards measuring 5 inches in width). A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. Signed by Harrison on the title page. A decent copy with a couple of minor stains along the top edge of the jacket. According to Harrison's bibliography (Orr and Torry, A12b), there are two "states" of the binding for this book. This is incorrect. The publisher recalled the 5-inch copies and replaced them with ones measuring 4-7/8 inches, while also fixing a problem with the binding. The problem is usually explained as something to do with the glue. I suspect it actually has to do with the size of the page block, which is too big for the binding. This means the publisher ordered a second *printing* of the book, identical to the first… Read More

Description:
1989. A pencil drawing of a cobra head used to illustrate Jim Harrison's poem, "Cobra" in the Clark City Press edition of The Theory and Practice of Rivers. Three years earlier, Chatham illustrated another edition of the poems, but with atmospheric rather than literal drawings. Clark City Press was Chatham's imprint. The drawing measures roughly 2-3/4 by 5-1/2 inches on a larger sheet. It is framed in light-colored wood to just shy of 17 by 21 inches. The mat opening is about 5-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches. Chatham (1939-2019) was a landscape painter who spent most of his career working in Montana. His paintings provided the cover illustrations for a number of his friend Jim Harrison's books. Chatham wrote on flyfishing and illustrated a number of books about the natural world, including several of Harrison's books. A fine drawing in a fine frame (not examined outside of the frame). With a label from Rebecca Fine Art in Livingston, Montana, on the back of the frame.
