Description:
First American edition of the author's contentious fourth novel, which was expurgated following its seizure in England. Near fine in tan buckram stamped black, lacking dust jacket. Square and tight with no cocking. Title-page verso bears a copyright date of 1915, while the title-page is dated 1916. Roberts gives date of publication as 15 November 1915, complicating issues by noting that Huebsch "published a more expensive edition of The Rainbow in 1916 [A7 note, p28]." The second and third printings from Huebsch however are explicitly dated 1921 & 1922 respectively. Copies with a 1915 title-page, if they ever did exist, appear not to have survived. A brilliant copy of the first American edition, cloth fresh, stamping vivid; 'marred' solely by an ink name neat at crown. 8vo. 480pp]: [x], 470 (last leaf blank). Rare in such exemplary condition.

Description:
First American Edition, First Printing. Two volumes (complete when published, a supplement was published a few years later). Quite rare thus. Swedish explorer and travel writer Sven Hedin (1865-1952) made four expeditions to Central Asia, studying the topography and geology of the region, as well as both the prehistoric and modern culture. Painstakingly dedicated to his research, Hedin documented his travels thoroughly in numerous published volumes; 'Trans-Himalaya' is an account of Hedin's exploration of Tibet, particularly the Trans-Himalaya, a 1,600-kilometre long mountain range in China, and the sources of the Indus and Brahmaputra Rivers. Hedin is credited as being the first European to reach the Kailash region, and his discoveries paved the way for major scientific and cultural documentation of the Asian region by European scholars. Profusely illustrated with black & white plates, including photographs and sketches by the author, as well as 10 maps (complete), including 2 large color folding…

First Edition thus. Fine, as new. Three quarter Red Buckram with textured, pictorial boards. In a fine, black slipcase. Beautifully illustrated with frontispiece and 8 richly colored illustrations by Anne-Marie Jones. Octavo. 320 pp. A beautiful edition of this timeless classic. The story chronicles the experiences of Frederic Henry, an American serving on the Italian Front as an ambulance driver in 1915. After being injured by a shell, he begins a love affair with a beautiful English nurse, Catherine Barkley. But after his return to the Front, the tide begins to turn against the Allies, and following the desperate Italian retreat at Caporetto, Frederic's only escape is with Catherine. Molded from Hemingway's own experiences on the Italian Front, Frederic's narrative resembles a memoir, mirroring Hemingway's lifelong quest for the most 'truthful' form of the written word.
