Description:
John Lawrence Le Breton Hammond (1872-1949) and Lucy Barbara Hammond (1873-1961) were historians and authors known for their works on social history, particularly the plight of the working class and the origins of social discontent arising from the working class experience. Married in 1901, both had received a classical education, and they were most well-known for their trilogy composed of The Village Labourer (1911), The Town Labourer (1917), and The Skilled Labourer (1919), which surveyed the experiences of the working class at the time of the Industrial Revolution.
Both were active in social causes. Barbara was an early feminist, and Leonard worked as a journalist for papers such as The Nation and the Manchester Guardian. He is particularly associated with the New Liberalism of the Edwardian period.
Their book The Bleak Age, published by Penguin first in 1934, and then in a revised form in 1947, of which this is an example, was an abridgement of their 1930 book The Age of the Chartists. This work,… Read More

Description:
First appearing as a comic in the pages of the Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper in 1918, the adventures of Seckatary Hawkins, the alter ego of author Robert F. Schulkers, went on to appear in book form beginning in 1926. Seckatary Hawkins acts as the secretary of his group of friends, taking on the task of recording their adventures in first-person in the various books, which went on to be a hallmark of early 20th century American children's literature. The tales were inspired by Schulkers' own childhood in Covington, Kentucky and became hugely popular, inspiring the creation of the Seckatary Hawkins fan club, The Fair and Square Club, the name of which reflects the moral lessons imparted in many of the stories. Notable amongst the fans of Seckatary Hawkins was Harper Lee, who mentions the first of the books in the final pages of To Kill a Mockingbird.
The Yellow Y tells the story of rival gangs searching for hidden treasure. This first edition from 1926 is in Good condition, with some staining and wear… Read More

Description:
Arriving in Canada from Brittany, France in 1912, Louis Hemon worked as a farmhand in the rural area of Péribonka, in the municipality of Maria-Chapdelaine, Quebec, Canada. During his time there he made observations of the region and the people living there which would go on to form the basis for his novel, Maria Chapdelain, which was first published in 1914, serialised in the Paris newspaper, Le Temps. Considered to be the first novel of this type, it is a snapshot of rural Quebec life in the early twentieth century, and a fascinating example of the work of a lesser-known French author.
This edition was published by the MacMillan Company of Canada in 1942, as part of the St Martin's Classics series. This small, attractive volume may be categorised as being in Very Good condition, with some staining to the boards, and some fading to the lettering on the spine. The text inside is clear and bright, with pages free of foxing or other blemishes, and the binding is tight.
