Description:
This is a rambling, satirical American novel by Hugh Henry Brackenridge, a Pittsburgh writer, lawyer, judge, and justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The book was first published in 1792.The hero, Captain John Farrago, is a frontier Don Quixote who leaves on a whim his Western Pennsylvania farm to "ride about the world a little, with his man Teague at his heels, to see how things were going on here and there, and to observe human nature".
The book is arguably the first important work of fiction about the American frontier and called "to the West what Don Quixote was to Europe". It first appeared in 1792 in two parts, and the third and fourth sections of the book appeared in 1793 and 1797, and a revision in 1805, with a final addition in 1815. Henry Adams called it "a more thoroughly American book than any written before 1833."

Description:
Song publishing is the one constant in the carousel of recorded music now spanning the past century, and has been the way that song-credits and publishing revenue have caused ructions and recriminations, and inspired writers by making them poor and lawyers rich.Whether it be Procol Harum going to court to decide who really wrote 'Whiter Shade of Pale' or the Moody Blues wanting their fair share of 'Nights of White Satin', when the song-credits get divvied up, a parting of the ways citing 'musical differences' is almost inevitable. So here are some choice examples of poplore held up to the light, some familiar to music fans others not, designed to prove that Dylan knew of what he wrote when he suggested, 'Money doesn't talk, it swears'.Between them, they provide the unvarnished story of popular song from the days jukeboxes and radio replaced wax cylinders and piano rolls to the era of digital downloads, legal and illegal.

Description:
For the first time Merlin Holland (Wilde's only grandson) presents the original transcript of the famous Wilde vs Queensberry trial. With extensive footnotes and a new introduction, this definitive account is a dramatic read to delight Wilde enthusiasts and the general reader. One of the most famous love affairs in literary history is that of Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas. When it became public, it cost Wilde everything. Merlin Holland has discovered the original courtroom transcript of the trial which led to his grandfather's tragedy. Here for the first time is the true record, without the distortions of previous accounts. On 18th February 1895 Bosie's father, the Marquess of Queensberry, delivered a note to the Albemarle Club addressed to 'Oscar Wilde posing as somdomite [sic]'. With Bosie's encouragement, Wilde decided to sue the Marquess for libel. As soon as the trial opened London's literary darling was at the centre of the greatest scandal of his time. Wilde's fall…

Description:
In his own unmistakably contrarian voice, Jerome Holtzman, national baseball columnist for The Chicago Tribune, has compiled the first complete history of the commissioners of baseball. With the office of the commissioner of baseball only recently filled, and the sport struggling to rebuild its image, there's never been a better time for an incisive history of the game's power brokers. Legendary figures such as Ford Frick, A. Bartlett Giamatti, Happy Chandler, and Judge Landis are brought to life as Holtzman takes us inside baseball's oval office and traces, in uncensored and lively detail, the dissolution of the commissioners' powers.

Description:
It was a corporate double-cross, 50 years ago this month, that produced one of President John F. Kennedy's most famous lines. The Democrat, after just a year in office, was concerned about potentially rising inflation. His administration set an informal but well-publicized target of having wage increases and price hikes match productivity increases. Meanwhile, Steelworkers' bargaining over a contract with the nation's steel companies was getting nowhere.
The administration intervened. It didn't want a rerun of the 4-month steel strike of 1959 under GOP President Eisenhower. Labor Secretary Arthur Goldberg, a longtime union counsel, mediated the talks. The two sides reached agreement on March 31.
But on April 10, Roger Blough, CEO of U.S. Steel, the largest of the firms, with 25% of the market, met Kennedy in the Oval Office and told him the company was immediately raising prices by $6 a ton – and that other steel companies would follow. Six did. The 3.5% hike enraged the president.… Read More

Description:
In Homo Ludens, the classic evaluation of play that has become a "must-read" for those in game design, Dutch philosopher Johan Huizinga defines play as the central activity in flourishing societies. Like civilization, play requires structure and participants willing to create within limits. Starting with Plato, Huizinga traces the contribution of Homo Ludens, or "Man the player" through Medieval Times, the Renaissance, and into our modern civilization. Huizinga defines play against a rich theoretical background, using cross-cultural examples from the humanities, business, and politics. Homo Ludens defines play for generations to come. "A happier age than ours once made bold to call our species by the name of Homo Sapiens. In the course of time we have come to realize that we are not so reasonable after all as the Eighteenth Century with its worship of reason and naive optimism, though us; "hence moder fashion inclines to designate our species asHomo Faber: Man the Maker. But though faber…
