A little rubbing to the spine edges. Slight staining to leather. Bookplate of Michael Ernest Sadler (Master of University College Oxford and father of Michael Sadler). Light to moderate foxing, particularly to the initial pages. Pencil annotations to the verso of the front end paper. 240 by 170mm (9½ by 6¾ inches).

A little rubbed, but still attractive. All edges gilt. Marbled end papers. A variety of poems, author's include Jean Ingelow, Dora Greenwell, Mrs Tom Tailor, The Hon Mrs Norton, Amelia B. Edwards, Jennett Humphreys and the author of "John Halifax Gentleman". Internally in a sound state, but with moderate foxing to most of the pages. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1807. First edition. Original stiff card boards. Ex-library copy with label to front paste down and a couple of discrete library stamps. viii, 1-112 pp. With engraved map of two voyages to the Baltic. Some copies include an additional folding map, but Copac states that this is dated 1808 and suggests that this was in subsequent editions. The boards are a little darkened. Rubbing and chipping to the spine with a little loss. Binding holding well. Internally clean and tidy, Slight darkening to title page edges. No marks other than library stamps. Overall a very good example. 290 x 230 mm (11½ x 9 inches). Copac ref. 19331769 "The geography of Europe; extracted from King Alfred's Anglo-Saxon version of Orosius" (p. [57]-90). Lightly age-toned pages. One or two small spots to prelims. 256 pp. 210 x 140 mm (8¼ x 5½ inches). Ralph Hammond Innes CBE, was a British novelist who wrote over 30 novels, as well as children's and travel books.

Both book and dust jacket in a very good / near fine condition. The preceding books are: 'A Family Affair' and 'Death at the Chase', in which Bobby Appleby played only a minor part. This time he does most of the detecting; and even finds the corpse!

Original dark green buckram with a little rubbing to the covers and edges. Brown label to the spine of each volume with titles in gilt. Complete with 52 aquatint plates, two maps and aquatint titles. The binding to the front of Volume I is a touched cracked (but holding). In Volume II an early gather (with the list of plates and first plate) are detached but present. Pages a little darkened and with some foxing, but still a very attractive copy. Some water damage to bottom edge of plates and text of Volume I. In a lovely cream coloured mount. Ready to frame. Visible image size: 130 x 165 mm (5 x 6½ inches). Actual size in mount: 260 x 280 mm (10¼ x 11 inches).

London: : John Lee, , 1843. A pamphlet (once bound in with other pamphlets). Complete. Title page, Introduction, text. The pamphlet now appears disbound, as it has been removed from a collection - but is complete in itself. A touch of darkening to the covers, and a small stain to the bottom of pages 4/5 but otherwise in good clean condition. Now held in an archival wallet. 24 pp. A scarce item, Copac shows holdings only at BL, Oxford & Cambridge. William Joseph Irons (1812-1883) was an Anglican priest and Theolgian. He was a strong defender of Church of England as the Established Church, and argued against seceding from the church (whether to Rome or to the more Protestant churches). He was the vicar of Brompton at the time of the publication of this work, and the introduction is dated Brompton April 1843. He is names by Lawrence Crumb (in "The Oxford Movement and its leaders, a bibliography of Secondary and Lesser Primary Sources") as the probable author of this work.

'...To which is prefixed, a geographical memoir of Abyssinia and South-Eastern Africa by James McQueen esq. grounded on the missionaries' journals, and the expedition of the Pacha of Egypt up the Nile.' Original brown blind stamped buckram with gilt titles to spine. Yellow end papers. Small bookseller's embossed stamp to the half title. (George Gardham of Beverley). Two folding hand coloured maps of the relevant parts of Africa.. The buckram is a little faded and rubbed to the edge. There is a little chipping to the head and tail of the spine with slight loss. A split to the board has been repaired. A closed tear to the half title page has been neatly repaired. The maps are in very nice clean condition. xxvii, 529. pp

Caroline Macdonald carried out missionary work in Tokyo prisons, and this is the true story of the convicted murderer Tokichi Ishii who spent 27 years incarcerated for his crime. Mrs Macdonald befriended Ishii and enjoyed many discussions about Christianity and Buddhism with him prior to his death..
