The subject is a beautiful woman wearing a hat, and fashionable fur collar from the time. Her facial features and best points are highlighted by the artist, showing real skill with chalk. Signed by Ingel in the portrait. Circa mid to late 1920s. Sold under glass, in bronze effect frame, under passe-partout. If shipped, postage will be quoted at cost (either in frame or outside). Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1807. First edition. Original stiff card boards. Ex-library copy with label to front paste down and a couple of discrete library stamps. viii, 1-112 pp. With engraved map of two voyages to the Baltic. Some copies include an additional folding map, but Copac states that this is dated 1808 and suggests that this was in subsequent editions. The boards are a little darkened. Rubbing and chipping to the spine with a little loss. Binding holding well. Internally clean and tidy, Slight darkening to title page edges. No marks other than library stamps. Overall a very good example. 290 x 230 mm (11½ x 9 inches). Copac ref. 19331769 "The geography of Europe; extracted from King Alfred's Anglo-Saxon version of Orosius" (p. [57]-90). Original dark green buckram with a little rubbing to the covers and edges. Brown label to the spine of each volume with titles in gilt. Complete with 52 aquatint plates, two maps and aquatint titles. The binding to the front of Volume I is a touched cracked (but holding). In Volume II an early gather (with the list of plates and first plate) are detached but present. Pages a little darkened and with some foxing, but still a very attractive copy. Some water damage to bottom edge of plates and text of Volume I. The pamphlet now appears disbound, as it has been removed from a collection - but is complete in itself. A touch of darkening to the covers, and a small stain to the bottom of pages 4/5 but otherwise in good clean condition. Now held in an archival wallet. 24 pp. A scarce item, Copac shows holdings only at BL, Oxford & Cambridge. William Joseph Irons (1812-1883) was an Anglican priest and Theolgian. He was a strong defender of Church of England as the Established Church, and argued against seceding from the church (whether to Rome or to the more Protestant churches). He was the vicar of Brompton at the time of the publication of this work, and the introduction is dated Brompton April 1843. He is names by Lawrence Crumb (in "The Oxford Movement and its leaders, a bibliography of Secondary and Lesser Primary Sources") as the probable author of this work.

Two folding hand coloured maps of the relevant parts of Africa.. The buckram is a little faded and rubbed to the edge. There is a little chipping to the head and tail of the spine with slight loss.
