Description:
Mexico City: T.F. Neve, 1868. About very good.. 473pp. Contemporary quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Corners worn, spine ends rubbed. Text lightly toned, some minor foxing and soiling. Scarce contemporary printing of the trial of Maximilian I and his generals by Juarez and the victorious Liberal Mexican government, "Por delitos contra la independencia y seguridad de la nacion, el órden y la paz pública, el derecho de gentes y las garantías individuales." Their convictions led to swift execution by firing squad on June 19, 1867. The publication of an exhaustive, word-for-word account of the proceedings was intended to provide legitimacy to what amounted to a sham trial and summary execution of Maximilian and his staff following their capture at Queretaro. The text is nevertheless a fascinating document of one of the most notorious episodes in the history of independent Mexico, particularly for the extensive defense of Maximilian and the Loyalist generals mounted by their Mexican… Read More

Description:
Chicago: Mayhart Studio, 1917. Very good.. Large panoramic photograph, 8 x 90.5 inches. Rolled. Light wear at edges, with a couple of small chips and very short closed tears along top edge. minor dust soiling and toning. A fabulous and extremely long panoramic photograph, measuring approximately 7.5 feet in length, that depicts Camp Bowie in Fort Worth during October 1917. At this time, the camp was still under construction but also housed an entire infantry division in training for World War I. Ongoing construction efforts are clearly evident, as piles of lumber in various states of organization occupy the field in the center foreground. Already completed barracks and other out buildings occupy the right of the image, and thousands of army tents sweep into the background of the center and left portions of the image. A group of standard houses, likely for officers and their families, is located at the lower left of the image. The photographers, Mayhart Studio of Chicago, were responsible for a… Read More

Description:
San Antonio, 1917. Very good.. Large panoramic photograph, 8 x 92 inches. Rolled. Minor wear at edges, with one very short closed tear at top edge. Light blemish in negative at center of image. Light dust soiling and toning. An outstanding and extremely long panoramic photograph, measuring well over 7.5 feet in length, that depicts Camp Travis in San Antonio, following its recent opening. Although the camp was open and housing an entire division-in-training at the time of this image, the camp was still under construction, as evidenced by the organized piles of lumber at the far right of the image and the incomplete barracks building in the center foreground. The panorama nevertheless gives a sense of the scope and size of the training camp, with barracks and outbuildings stretching almost as far as the eye can see in the center and left sections of the photograph. Structures are sparser in the right-hand side of the image, both because they as yet unbuilt and because some of the training fields were… Read More

Description:
[Washington DC, 1946. Still very good.. Eleven items, totaling [56]pp. Previously folded; stapled, with slight oxidization. Minor edge wear. Light toning and dust soiling, heavier in places. A very interesting group of bulletins distributed by the Interagency Demobilization Committee (IDC) in the waning months of and just after World War II that seek to provide employment information to "demobilized" conscientious objectors. The IDC was a subsection of the Society of Friends' National Service Board that sought to address issues relating to objectors being released from prison, returning from work camps, and being discharged from other Civilian Public Service posts. Each bulletin present here lists job opportunities in a variety of areas, with a heavy focus on agriculture, social service, education, and cooperative community work, though positions in many fields are represented. The eight reports included in this group run from February 1945 to May 1946; two additional reports and one supplement… Read More

Washington DC, 1947. Overall, about very good.. Fifty-six periodical issues, plus thirteen pamphlets and ephemera. Occasional edge wear and browning to periodical issues. Otherwise, minor toning and scattered foxing. A strong run of over fifty-five issues of the World War II-era pacifist periodical, "The Reporter," published by the National Service Board for Religious Objectors (NSBRO) from 1942 to 1947. "The Peace Churches created [NSBRO] in October 1940 and initially called it the national Council for Religious Conscientious Objectors. They changed the name to the National Service Board for Religious Objectors one month later. The Board initially consisted of representatives from the Brethren Service Committee, the Mennonite Central Committee, and the American Friends Service Committee. Throughout the war, NSBRO was the chief representative body for conscientious objectors. It served as the intermediary between the Peace Churches and the Selective Service, and it aided in selecting [Civilian… Read More

Light wear at edges of boards and album leaves. Photos in corner mounts. Minor fading and mirroring to a few images. An extensive album of vernacular photographs compiled by an American G.I. stationed in India during or just after World War II. Calcutta (now Kolkata) was the main base of operations for British and American forces against the Japanese in Burma and further into southeast Asia during the war. Kolkata itself was host to over 150,000 American soldiers from the beginning of the India-Burma campaign in Spring 1942 until the end of the war. This album contains nearly 250 images that depict how U.S. soldiers experienced life in the capital of Bengal. Oblong quarto. Contemporary black cloth, "Photographs" stamped in gilt on front cover, string tied. Spine chipped, boards a bit soiled and edge-worn. Edges of some photographs a bit worn, but overall in very nice shape. Likely a unique photographic record of a substantial municipal improvement project in Champaign, Illinois at the turn of the 20th century. According to the title card taped to the first page, the project was directed by George Tiller, the foreman of construction, and W.H. Tarrant, the city engineer, and took place over the course of three years, 1898-1900. The project was focused on road improvements, and features the paving of several streets in Champaign. New York: Newcomb Publishing Co, 1913. Very good.. 16pp. Oblong quarto. Original pictorial self wrappers, stapled. A few small scuffs and edge chips, moderate dust-soiling to wrappers, short tears to spine. Internally clean. A rare viewbook of the city of Chicago ostensibly seen at night by printing scenes from around the city in reverse black and white photogravure. The images capture various scenes along Michigan Avenue, as well as South, Clark, Randolph, Washington, and La Salle streets, along with a closeup of Saint-Gaudens' Lincoln statue and a wider shot including the Ulysses S. Grant statue, both in Lincoln Park. The headlights of cars and windows of the buildings along the streets are enhanced with light effects to accentuate the nighttime setting. [Cary, Ill, 1960. Very good.. Approximately [50]pp. of typescript material, forty original photographs, plus numerous printed ephemera. Housed in a quarto three-ring binding in plastic sleeves. Light tanning. Minor wear at some edges. A terrific agricultural service and training manual, which compiles advertisements, forms, service techniques, and instructional documents for "herd technicians" of the Curtiss Breeding Service, founded after World War II and based in Cary, Illinois. "Herd Technician" was a euphemism for traveling salesman and artificial inseminator, whose principal capacities were to obtain orders for Curtiss brand frozen bull semen and to provide breeding services to local farm herds in his area. The company was founded by Otto Schnering, who first owned a large midwestern candy company, but transferred much of his interest to agriculture during World War II. The typed introduction to this manual reads, in part: "In 1942 Mr. Schnering purchased some farms north of Chicago and… Read More

Nueva York, 1864. Very good.. 926,[4],304pp. Contemporary Mexican-style calf, elaborately blindstamped covers, spine titles in gilt. Spine sunned and somewhat worn, minor wear to edges, corners a bit rubbed. Occasional minor foxing to text. A Spanish language translation of The Holy Bible printed in New York in the penultimate year of the Civil War, with interesting provenance. The massive work prints both the Old and New Testaments by stereotype, in a version of the text that claims to be "carefully collated with ancient languages." Between the two works are two inserted leaves intended for a "Registro de Familia," though the pages in this copy are blank. This copy was donated to the U.S. Christian Commission, whose bookplate states it is intended for "Reading for Army and Navy," with his gift inscription reading, "With Compliments of Van R.K. Hilliard, New Orleans, La. 1873." At that time, Hilliard was working for the Freedmen's Bureau in New Orleans.

Mexico City, 1817. Very good.. Broadside, approximately 16.75 x 12 inches. Previously folded. Minor wear at edges. Light toning and an occasional small fox mark. Contemporary manuscript annotations at foot; contemporary ink stamps on blank verso. A rare broadside decree issued in January 1817 by Juan Ruiz de Apodaca y Eliza, the penultimate Viceroy of New Spain, that orders increased overnight patrols in Mexico City in an attempt to maintain order and to crack down on insurgent groups in the capital. He begins by reiterating the commitment of the colonial government to defeating the rebels and to protecting the peace and tranquility of the King's loyal subjects: "Así es, que siendo el sosiego y buen órden de las poblaciones uno de los mas importantes negocios del Gobierno, y que al proprio tiempo que se destruyen y castigan (como corresponde) por todas partes á las gavillas de rebeldes que con las armas en la mano infestan estos territorios; es preciso que en las Ciudades, Villas y Lugares se… Read More

Mexico City: Mariano Ontiveros, 1821. Very good.. [4]pp., on a half-sheet bifolium. Disbound from a sammelband. Minor dampstaining and wear at edges. A brief series of parables on the dangers of a large standing army, and the dangers that its existence might bring about during periods of political instability. Cranes, rats, and cheese; a Gypsy, and horse, and a cat; and a convent of mixed religious orders are all invoked to argue that the size and heterogeneous command of the Mexican army that grew out the independence movement ought to be reduced. Anonymous, but signed "Wagcinton Napoleon" [sic] above the colophon. An interesting example of pamphleteering in Mexico in the period immediately after independence, and the exchange of thought in print concerning the organization and operation of the new government. Scarce; OCLC locates only two copies in U.S. institutions, at Yale and Texas A&M.

Description:
Lowell: Charles L. Knapp & Co, 1882. Very good.. 20pp. Original printed wrappers. Light wear and soiling, lower corners chipped; covers separated from text. Internally clean. A very early and apparently unrecorded work on the spread of the telephone, here for investors in telephone stocks in the area of Lowell, Massachusetts. Presented as an educational pamphlet on the telephone and its capabilities, the work provides a brief history, as well as a synopsis of the telephone exchanges currently active in the area and the rates thereof. To have a regular line installed in one's home to connect to a Lowell company exchange cost $2.50. The telephone was developed in 1869, with the first exchange opening in New Haven, Connecticut in 1878. This work states that in Connecticut and Rhode Island, "it is the intention to furnish every town, and every school district of two hundred inhabitants, with Telephone service before the close of 1882."
