The book discusses the strikes by laborers and the causes, Public places were being used as dumping grounds, sale of street manure, slaughter houses in the city, livery stabes and their conditions. Filled with statistical tables and comments on same - this is an awesome look back to the 1860' in New york and in some cases London and Paris. It also refers to the lack of registration of births and deaths of the people of ireland so that accurate pictures of the movement of the Irish cannot be given. There are comments about street cleaning, the disgrace of the city markets, sewers, removal of dead animals, etc. An altogether fascinating book on thre city in 1860 - but especially so for its comments vs England. Book has many statistical tables but also 61 pages of introductory commentary at the begiinning along with commentary attached to the statistical info. 263 pages - book is in very good condition, some foxing.
