Full calf, smooth backs, divided into six panels by gilt rule, morocco label to second panel, contrasting oval volume label to fourth. Slightly rubbed to extremities, spine ends worn, corners slightly bumped. Internally there is an ink stain to G3 (not affecting sense), some light browning and foxing, previous owners name to titles, but generally fairly clean. First published in 1751, this is the twelfth edition. Fleeman doubts the London imprint, suspecting it was actually printed in Edinburgh. Fleeman 50.3R/20. Reprint. Full Calf. Good+. 12mo.

Some minor wear to extremities, but still very solid. Internally some light foxing and staining, but generally fairly clean and bright. Tear to margin of 16I and 23T has been bound in upside down and back to front. Title pages in red and black. Fourth edition of Johnson's magnum opus, one of (probably) 1250 copies (Strahan's printing account, see Fleeman) and it was published on the 25th January 1773 at £4, 10s. Fleeman 55.4D/4a. Internally generally lightly browned and lightly foxed throughout, sometimes heavier, stain to bottom corner at gutter for most of 'A' in volume one, but generally clean. Small amount of loss to N4 in volume two, nicking text with loss to one word, several small nicks and tears to page edges, previous owner's name to head of titles.
