Dust Jacket is chipped and torn around the edges but does not affect text blurbs, title or ads on back panel. Blue cloth with white letters on spine and front cover. Gage served in the cabinets of Presidents Mckinley and Roosevelt, and was a significant figure in forming American financial institutions and banking laws as Secretary of the Treasury. Faint foxing on endpapers, else pages clean, bright and tight.

Printed on acid-free, 250-year-life paper. The facsimiles in these volumes have been produced from copies in the Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley. They contain an extensive introduction with an index in Vol 7. Frontispiece portrait of Hiram and his two sons in Vol 1. Johnson practiced law in 1888 in Sacramento. Moved to San Francisco in 1904, became assistant district attorney, and was one of the founders of the Progressive Party in 1912. He was Governor of California 1911-1917, and served as a Senator until his death in 1945. A great gift for a politician or anyone with interest in early 20th century California history spanning both World Wars.
