first edition, American issue folio (35.5 x 27 cm.) xiv, 487pp., 90 plates of wood-engraved illustrations, numerous large wood-engraved illustrations throughout, publisher's deep brown morocco backed brown cloth (imitating morocco), deep and elaborate border blocked on front cover in gilt and on rear cover in blind, central panel of front cover with 'Switzerland Illustrated' blocked in gilt in large and very elaborate lettering, spine titled and with large pictorial design of a mountain blocked in gilt, all edges gilt, title page lightly foxed, else a particularly nice clean firm copy. Uncommon in the de-luxe binding and rare in this condition.
This is a reissue of the London edition published by Bickers & Son in 1878. These are the London printed sheets with a New York title page.

first Irish edition tall 8vo. xxx, 378pp., large folding map, 16 engraved plates (1 folding), contemporary calf, smooth spine panelled by gilt fillets and with a plum red morocco label gilt, some scattered light dusty fingering in margins, minor wear and bruising to binding, but generally a very good copy in original condition.
Contemporary signatures of John Mahony on title and of Richard Mahony on endpaper.

ESTC t146384King (Antrim 1650 - 1729), philosopher, churchman, and historian, the son of poor Presbyterian immigrants, was educated at T.C.D. where he joined the Anglican Church. He was ordained in 1674 and became Bishop of Derry and, from 1703, Archbishop of Dublin. He was an early member of the Dublin Philosophical Society founded by William Molyneux. He wrote the highly influential State of the Protestants of Ireland under the late King James's Government in 1691 to justify the change in allegiance to King William, but he opposed most of the penal laws and condemned the incomplete ratification of the Treaty of Limerick. He opposed the growth of English influence in Irish affairs in such as Church patronage and the economy (he supported Swift against Wood's halfpence). tall 8vo. xx, 731pp., 13 plates (9 folding including one coloured), numerous illustrations through text, 116 brightly coloured and patterned actual dyed cloth samples pasted in as illustrations, illustrations in text, very well rebound in maroon cloth, spine lettered gilt, very good copy with clean fresh samples.
This work was first published in 1912 and this second edition is extensively revised and updated. The number of real cloth samples was increased from 84 to 118,"all new, and most of them produced on the large scale by the recipes which they are intended to illustrate. The preparation of special patterns for an edition of a book of this kind means much more work and management than meets the eye, but the authors are of the opinion that the time-honoured system of presenting specimens of the actual thing to the reader is well worth the trouble involved" [preface].
