London: Thomas Cautley Newby, 1855. Book. Fair. Hardcover. First Edition in Three Volumes. Three volumes uniformly bound in mid-century maroon leather over marbled boards, cloth corner pieces. Titles on the spines read simply "A Tale of Jerusalem". Leatherwork tight, but chipped on spine ends of Volume II (see photograph); marbled paper on boards generally rubbed along edges -- and missing on front of Volume I. Contents tight and in good order, with undated signatures on front pastedowns, and a small stamp ("Cancelled") on front free endpapers and title pages, rear free endpaper missing in Volume III. A fair copy of a very scarce title. Collates: I - [iv, including advertisement leaf] + 290pp; II - [iv including a different advertisement leaf] + 280pp; III - [iv, including a different advertisement leaf] + 262 pp + advertisement leaf + 8pp undated publisher's catalogue. Not in Wolff or Sadleir. Historical novel. The author was the father of novelist Julia Kavanagh.
