Lugd. (Leiden, Lugdunum); Batavor (Batavorum): Officina Elzeviriana. Original vellum binding shows usual soiling, else sound and tight. A later stamping of title on spine is partially rubbed off. Engraved frontispiece with shield and winged creature shows a touch of wear to top edge, otherwise pages are unmarked. Author is not shown, but the book is known to have been written by famed geographer and director of the Dutch West Indies Company Joannes de Laet. De Laet's History of the New Word has sometimes been judged the best 17th century description of the Americas. This small tome on Portugal describes her many colonies as well, including the largest one, Brazil. 460 pages + 9 page Index. . Very Good. Vellum. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1641.
