Lawrence's poems, illustrated by Caldecott medalists Alice and Martin Provensen, with an introduction by poet Donald Hall. The paintings depict scenes from Lawrence's childhood in an English mining town and the surrounding countryside: "A man should never earn his living, / if he earns his life he'll be lovely. / A bird / picks up its seeds or little snails / between heedless earth and heaven / in heedlessness." A fine copy of an unusual and touching book, signed by both Provensens on the front free endpaper. Slim quarto, original white cloth over gilt-stamped blue paper boards, original unclipped pictorial dust jacket.
