Book itself has almost no wear or damage, except for some spotting/splatter on the spine, and some light rubbing to dyed page block edges, presumably just from being taken out of slipcase. Book is in good condition but jacket is in poor condition, still intact but with large tears and chips, as well as staining/soiling. Titling on spine is slightly faded, spine discoloured, but still legible. Page block edges are browned and foxed, light foxing to early/rear pages, but text is clean and free of foxing. There are sporadic pencil markings beside the text, some erased. Binding tight, spine slightly cocked. Minor marks and wear to boards, board corners slightly bumped. Hardcover super 8vo, decorated green boards with gilt titles, no D/J (as issued?), decorated endpapers, tope edge gilt, Inscribed by author on frontispiece, with tissue guards. some weakening to hinges, bumping to corners and a small 1cm hole to cloth by the title, some foxing but interiors remain mostly clean, and all photographic plates are not affected. Overall condition good. Leavitt entered show business as a blackface minstrel show singer, before making the leap to theatre manager. In his biography he claims to have introduced lithographic theatre posters to American show business, and he is also credited with starting the first touring Burlesque company.
