Description:
King Ranch, located in South Texas between Corpus Christi and Brownsville near Kingsville, is the largest ranch in Texas.[3] The King Ranch comprises 825,000 acres (3,340 km2; 1,289 sq mi)[4] and was founded in 1853 by Captain Richard King and Gideon K. Lewis. It includes portions of six Texas counties, including most of Kleberg County and much of Kenedy County, with portions extending into Brooks, Jim Wells, Nueces, and Willacy Counties. The ranch does not consist of one single contiguous plot of land, but rather four large sections called divisions. The divisions are the Santa Gertrudis, the Laureles, the Encino and the Norias. Only the first two of the four divisions border each other, and that border is relatively short.[5] The ranch was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961.The King Ranch, by artist/author Tom Lea, is a two-volume definitive work that covers not only the history of the ranch, but also that of the region—most notably the Rio Grande Valley. As this is a set of…

Winner of the Pulitzer PrizeFeaturing a foreword by Battle Cry of Freedom author James McPhersonA vibrant portrait of Civil War-era Washington, D.C. that is "packed and running over with the anecdotes, scandals, personalities, and tragi-comedies of the day" (The New Yorker)1860: The American capital is sprawling, fractured, squalid, colored by patriotism and treason, and deeply divided along the political lines that will soon embroil the nation in bloody conflict. Chaotic and corrupt, the young city is populated by bellicose congressmen, Confederate conspirators, and enterprising prostitutes. Soldiers of a volunteer army swing from the dome of the Capitol, assassins stalk the avenues, and Abraham Lincoln struggles to justify his presidency as the Union heads to war. Reveille in Washington focuses on the everyday politics and preoccupations of Washington during the Civil War. From the stench of corpse-littered streets to the plunging lace on Mary Lincoln's evening gowns, Margaret Leech illuminates the…

Description:
Lucan was a Roman poet born at Corduba, in Spain. His success as a poet aroused the jealousy of Nero, who forbade him to recite in public. In consequence Lucan joined in the failed conspiracy of Piso against Nero, and was compelled to take his own life. This is his chief work, a heroic poem descent the struggle between Caesar and Pompey. "Rowe has vigorously and diligently preserved Lucan's ambitions." Nicholas Rowe was an English dramatist, poet and miscellaneous writer, was appointed Poet Laureate in 1715. His poems and plays were well-received in his lifetime and his translation of this book is generally regarded as the best in English.
