Text printed in inkjet. Translucent covers with inkjet printed on Glama. Signed and numbered by the artist. Marlene MacCallum: "Theme and Permutation is one of a series of artist's books inspired by the experience of living in Corner Brook's Townsite area on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland. It is s a response to the permutations and variations of the type-4 Townsite House. Digital tools were used to translate the original film source of eight different window images from five houses. The sixteen offset lithographic plates were custom printed in twenty-nine separate press runs. Each image is the result of a different combination of plates. The structure is a sewn pamphlet with translucent covers. The viewer enters the body of the book with a tritone image of a single Townsite window. As one… Read More

[Madison, Wisconsin]:: ORCS,, 2017.. Edition of 30. 9.5 x 8"; 92 pages. Full color. Cloth covered boards. Die-cut rectangle on front board for viewing landscape image. Signed and numbered by the artist. Christopher Maddox: "'America, Alien Nation' is an abridged, limited edition facsimile of a large altered book I completed in 2017. Influenced by the compelling and often regrettable history of palimpsests, the piece was made by selectively scraping away portions of the original imagery of the book, then adding content via collage and mixed media. "The pre-alteration coffee table book was a visual homage to the American landscape. It glorified a history of Western expansion with images that evoked the romance of the Wild West and the splendor of modern urban development. Through passive omission, the pre-altered book filtered out a history of genocide, slavery, mass extinctions, economic polarization and ghetto sprawl. The pervasive alterations of the artist's book… Read More

Perfect bound with printed heavyweight translucent vellum overwrap. Signed and numbered by the artist. Christopher Maddox: "'Corruption' tracks ten inflammatory quotations from world leaders as the words are translated across language barriers. Each chapter cycles a [highly-publicized] statement through the languages of the world's 80 most influential nations. The machine translation (MT) platforms used are noted throughout the work. The final translation for each chapter is presented on a full spread, typeset in a manner that means to accentuate its new poetic, interpretive essence. A folded pamphlet titled 'We Will Bury You' is mounted to the inside back cover. The booklet explains the origins and misunderstandings surrounding the infamous mis-translated quote by Nikita Khrushchev. It… Read More

Description:
[Madison, Wisconsin]:: ORCS,, 2017.. Edition of 300. 6 x 9"; 84 pages. Softcover. Screen printed dust jacket. Signed and numbered by the artist. Christopher Maddox: "Fake Art! is a series of statistical and poetic text analyses. Each piece imposes audacious task-reassignments and other structural manipulations to shift tone and meaning of the words broadcast by contemporary political figures. Book #1 focuses on interviews given by Donald Trump with the Associated Press and Time magazine in 2017. The new iteration may appear elevated, degraded, or a combination of these that can both satisfy and disturb the reader. The reader's experience will depend on perspective and attitude - on the sum of one's encounters with the world, and his or her confirmation bias. "The texts presented in staggered, narrative poetic form within are not redacted. Each such page presents a single transcribed response in its entirety as spoken by President Trump. Typographic formatting has been… Read More

[Madison, Wisconsin]:: ORCS,, 2017.. Edition of 5. 14 x 8.75"; 215 pages. Printed on vellum. Signed and numbered by Maddox. Bound in blue cloth covers over boards. Christopher Maddox: "? (antiparallel) investigates shifts of meaning that occur when prose is translated. This analytical and poetic study is built from two versions of The Garden of Forking Paths by Jorge Luis Borges: a version translated by Borges and his close creative partner Norman Thomas di Giovanni, and a more recent Penguin Classics release, translated by Andrew Hurley at the bequest of Borges' surviving heir, Maria Kodama, who wanted to cut di Giovanni out of a royalties contract. "A central theme, conveyed in the title of the story, is the notion that one might imagine a multiplicity of personal existences, each of which expresses a choice made in life that initiated a sequence of events and a particular existence - parallel but unique realities. Such paradoxical antiparallels are mirrored in the… Read More

Signed and numbered by the artist. Peter Malutzki: "This relatively small 56-page book made of glassine paper is exclusively devoted to a poem by Clemens Brentano. What especially fascinated me about this famous poem was the contrast between dream and painful awakening. I immediately had pictorial associations - nothing was more obvious than seeing Brentano's dreamers in the faces of people who are sleeping peacefully, their closed eyes a universally understood symbol of calm. In contrast: the sudden awakening, being immediately and unmistakably present in the wide open eyes of the 'naked truth'. Snap out of the dream. Stop imagining things. Look the facts straight in the eye. Or: Dream on. We all know the sayings. The tone of the poem changes with the line Kömmt dann Wahrheit… Read More

Linen-over-board cover with front label. In slipcase. Numbered and signed by the artist. Collage material from original pages of old books (some over 20 years old), red mould made-paper, and old correction labels. Peter Malutzki: "'Collagebuch eins' was not just meant to be a book with 14 collages pasted into it; it was an attempt (at least, it was my - probably still typically encyclopedic - goal) to exemplify and call into question the architecture of a book that is supposed to combine 'texts' and images. The 'textual message' is conveyed by rectangular shapes printed in red using brass rules. Starting with a simple rectangle on the first page, the shapes are increasingly sub-divided on each page in the course of the book. The succinct message in these 'dummy text… Read More

I cut the Mona Lisa pictures out of their photo frames." This painting by Leonardo da Vinci has been on permanent display at the Louvre in Paris since 1797.
