It was the voice of Whitefield which was the chief agent in starting that religious movement which grew to be almost a second Reformation in England. He soon was joined by others in the same grand cause, the Wesleys pre-eminent among them, but Whitefield was as much the representative man of the Great Revival of that time, as Luther had been of the Reformation in the sixteenth century.
