Signed by author on title page. First publication by Gertrude Ethel Mallette, comprising a group of children's poems and stories involving princesses, knights, fairies, and other whimsical characters, published while she was a student at the University of Washington. According to her hometown paper, the Spokane Spokesman, Mallette was the first woman to edit a college publication on campus, a monthly periodical called the Washingtonian. She went on to publish a series of adventures, romances, and mysteries for teen girls and young women. OCLC locates only two copies of the present work, at University of Washington and the Library of Congress.

Vinton, Ia, 1913. Very good.. [80]pp. Oblong octavo. Original printed wrappers. Light dampstaining and creasing to wraps. Light dust soiling internally. A scarce, profusely illustrated trade catalog for this Iowa harness company based in the town of Waterloo. The publication advertises and illustrates nearly forty different types of available harnesses, hundreds of harness parts, and several styles of saddle. "Every piece of work we send out represents us.... We use nothing but the best Oak Leather and guarantee all of our harness to be equal to the best in Workmanship and Durability.

A rare pocket-sized pamphlet in which Mao Zedong, President of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, expresses his support for the American Civil Rights Movement against the "repression of violence" by the United States government. The work was issued in several languages about twelve days after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., which is referenced in the first sentence: "Some days ago, Martin Luther King, the African-American clergyman, was suddenly assassinated by the U.S. imperialists". African Americans, especially those with experience in labor unions, had a long history with the Communist Party in the United States; the two groups often found themselves on the same side of various issues related to workplace discrimination, and often worked and protested together.

Short separations along old folds and minor losses at fold points and lower right edge, sympathetically repaired but slightly affecting printed area. Light tanning and occasional, small patches of dampstaining. A rare, early Rand McNally map of the Dakota Territory, published in 1881 just before division and statehood. As utilized here, it comprises a promotional for land agents in the southeastern corner of what would become South Dakota -- Yankton, Sioux Falls, Chamberlain, Mitchell, and Madison -- as well as for an agent in Milwaukee representing the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railway. Their business names and locations are printed along the lower edge of the sheet. Mexico City, 1926. Very good.. 37,[1]pp. Original orange printed wrappers, stapled. Minor wear, text lightly tanned. An enthusiastic guide for Spanish emigrants to Mexico, with the author extolling the country's virtues at every turn. Fewer than ten copies in OCLC, only three of them in the United States -- UC Berkeley, the University of Texas, and Southern Methodist University. Scarce and unusual.

Puebla, 1892. Good plus.. xii,123,[1]pp., plus twenty plates, of which nine folding. Contemporary quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Moderate wear to spine leather, edges, and corners; some scuffing to boards. Light toning and dust soiling. Borderline phrenological late-19th-century study of Mexican criminals by a pair of Pueblan army doctors, Francisco Martinez Baca and his assistant Manuel Vergara. The authors attempt some of usual tropes of phrenology, such cranial measurements and studies of head shapes. They also attempt to link various types of criminality with specific forms of brain damage, disease, or alcohol and drug addiction. Most interesting, principally because of the accompanying five dozen plates carrying a hundred mugshots of Mexican criminals, are their efforts to classify the appearance and character of perpetrators of certain crimes. Their findings are also presented in several large folding plates at the rear of the text. OCLC locates a handful of copies.

An interesting combination of death announcement, biography, and medical advertisement. The work opens by stating that Dr. Sarah DeLoss died November 14, 1906, and her medical practice has passed to her capable son-in-law, Dr. W.F. Hormann (who also speaks German, very useful for the Chicago populace of the time). The pamphlet lauds the amazing abilities of Dr. DeLoss over thirty years of intuitive, naturopathic practice, including a lengthy testimonial from another woman doctor. "We are about to tell of a woman who has reached the top of the ladder, not by hard study but through natural gifts. ... She is a perfect diagnostician, which is head among her many natural gifts. She is a natural botanist; she knows every growing plant and its medicinal use. ... She not only tells the disease, but the cure is forthcoming."… Read More

Light foxing and wear to text. Second edition, after the first of the previous year. A popular manual for hygiene and the diagnosing and curing of diseases. Translated from the French and published in Mexico three subsequent years, the present work provides advice on the means to stay well and prevent disease. Each tidbit of information is helpfully numbered (345 in all), with the opening sections being devoted to health and hygiene with useful suggestions such as avoiding drafts and cold, damp rooms; there follow several sections on various types of diseases with symptoms, causes, and recipes for curatives. The work covers everything from croup in children to heart palpitations to epileptic fits to the flux. The final half of the book is an alphabetical dictionary of afflictions, followed by an index. Patent medicine advertisement comprised of sixteen chromolithographic scenes of "Kickapoo Indian life," each bordered with slogans promoting the patent medicine. The scenes, some of which are based loosely on George Catlin's work, include "Attacking the Grizzly Bear," "The Scalp Dance," "Buffalo Hunting, "Buffalo Hunt under the White Wolf Skin," "Antelope Shooting," "Archery of the Mandans," "The Snow Shoe Dance," and others. Slogans include such guarantees as "There is no blood disease which Kickapoo Indian Sagwa cannot cure," "The uncivilized red man has produced the Kickapoo Indian salve," and "The Principal medicine for worms is the Kickapoo Indian worm killer." [Puebla?], 1931. Good.. [38, 22]pp. plus three leaves laid in. Contemporary quarter cloth and marbled boards. Binding moderately worn, leaves loose and toned, a few lightly chipped. In several legible hands. An interesting volume, used by someone to record recipes for cooking but also for medicinal curatives for a variety of ills. The half of the book used for cookery is more heavily worn, with clear signs of regular usage. Recipes are written in a narrative paragraph form, and include Sopa de Jocoqui, Coanos de Cielo, Pasteles de Almendra, Huevos Poblanos, Merengue Italiano, and others. Also in this section are recipes for everyday items like cold cream, mentholatum, and talcum powder, as well as a few that seem medicinal. In the section for obviously medical use, there are curatives for intestinal infection, for hemorrhoids, cures for colds and respiratory ailments, for wounds or contusions, and "para el cancer," among others. Slightly fragile, but full of colloquial knowledge.

Tacoma, 1906. Very good.. [8] leaves, printed rectos only. Original black wrappers, printed in gold, string-tied. Light wear and chipping to wrappers at spine edge. Small ink stamp on front flyleaf and final blank. Internally clean. With original mailing envelope. An odd production, printing eight "song poems" each of which with a labeled chorus. The eight leaves feature three different papers and typefaces, giving the volume a rather charming, homemade feel. Titles include "My Louisiana Home" and "That Is Her, My Mate of Old." This copy formerly on deposit in the Library of Congress, including the original transmittal envelope. We find no copies in OCLC.

Lincoln, 1906. Very good.. 68pp. plus frontispiece and errata. 12mo. Original grey printed wrappers. Light soiling and wear. Small ink stamp on verso of first leaf. Internally clean. Temperance poetry written by a doctor in Nebraska. In one piece, titled "Our Bondage: Written on Nebraska's Senate Refusing the County Option Bill," he writes: "King George once swayed his scepter here, / And ruled us with an iron hand... / King Alcohol now holds high sway, / And seeks to rule this land of ours-- / And in our legislative halls / He shows his great corrupting powers...." The copyright page advertises the author's address to apply for copies of the work, bound in cloth or wrappers. We locate three copies in OCLC, at the Huntington, Kansas City Public Library, and the Lincoln Public Library.

San Augustine, Tx: November 11, 1834. Good.. [4]pp. on two folio sheets, the first sheet on official "Sello Tercero" paper with the printed seal of Coahuila y Tejas at middle. Old folds, minor chipping along two fold lines costing a handful of words in the second leaf, several archival tape repairs to closed tears, moderate foxing and toning. An interesting manuscript land deed documenting the sale of a tract of land in San Augustine, Texas by a mother and daughter named Mary Concesion Sims and Marguerite Latham in 1834. The tract of land is described in detail, situated "on the West side of the Act Bayou having half a mile & five chains front on the Laid Bayou and running backwards three miles and bounded on the North by the lower line of the land sold by Jose Lewis(?) to A.C. Allen, and on the South by the land belonging to Athanase Cerda...." The two women sold the land for $100, and because they could not write, they each signed the document with an "X." [Ohio, 1960. Good.. [18] leaves, illustrated with 123 photographs mounted at corners with cello tape, plus twenty-seven loose photographs. Contemporary tan scrapbook album, string tied. Many leaves detached, photographs occasionally worn but overall in nice shape. A wonderful collection of vernacular photographs documenting the rural family life of Lee and Anjelita Cuevas of Ohio following World War II. The photographs capture the Cuevas parents at work and play, the children at school, Lee and fellow servicemen posed outside a theater and participating in an American GI Forum, other shots of Lee posed in his military uniform, the family on their farm as well as swimming at a lake, and more. The attribution to Lee and Anjelita Cuevas emanates from the handwritten captions on a few of the photographs, inscribed to them. A recent online obituary from the Port Clinton News Herald notes that Librado "Lee" Cuevas passed away in January 2022 in Oak Harbor, Ohio. He was born in Alamo, Texas in 1925, and… Read More

Some toning, but quite solid. An attractively printed and fairly large poster advertising a nickelodeon-era film depicting scenes and events in Mexico during its revolution of the 1910s. "SEE General Carranza, the new Ruler of Mexico, and his advisors. SEE Big Military Parade and Review of Army and Navy at Mexico City. SEE Vera Cruz Harbor and inspection of Sailors and Guns on Mexican Warships...." The appellation of Venustiano Carranza as the "New Ruler of Mexico" points to a release date of 1914, when he defeated Victoriano Huerta with the backing of Pancho Villa, and several newspapers carrying advertisements for showings in Los Angeles and Southern California in late 1914 and early 1915 corroborate this surmise. A fascinating and rare broadside in which the Inquisition attempts to prohibit pro-independence publications, including the 1814 Constitution of Apatzingán, during the midst of the Mexican Revolution. Dated July 8, 1815, this proclamation of the Inquisition first reiterates a blanket prohibition on what it labels seditious and anti-Catholic publications, that is to say, anything in favor of the revolution and independence. Mexico City, 1848. Very good.. 3pp. Printed on a single folded sheet. Dbd. Old vertical fold, minor foxing. A rare United States Army field printing pertaining to a notable incident that occurred during the Mexican-American War. In early January 1848, Lt. Col. Miles was ordered by Brig. Gen. Twiggs to take command of a wagon train and a small cadre of troops and then conduct them from northern Mexico to Mexico City. Mexican merchants availed themselves of the escort for safe conduct of their merchandise to the capital city and other destinations in the interior of the country. The wagon train consisted of 316 government wagons which stretched to three miles in length, with 1,700 pack mules adding another nine miles to the procession. Col. Miles had 1,300 troops under his command, but only 150 of them were cavalry. Mexican guerillas, under the command of Zenobia attacked the train between Santa Fe and Rio San Juan, resulting in the loss of 300 pack mules along with the goods belonging to the Mexican… Read More

Murray to his family back in New Albany, Indiana, in which he discusses his potential employment and that of his brother working for the government on steamboats down in Mexico. He writes: "...at this present time I am on board the S.S. George Lincoln bound down to the Rio Grand which I intend to leave her providing I can get something better to so at Rio Grand. You requested me to let you know if I could get anything for you to do this winter. But dear William now after the severe sickness of last summer there has arrived a great may people [from] different parts of the States and New Orleans at this present time is crowded, but I have no doubt but if you could get down to Rio Grand or any part of Mexico you might make out well by getting in the Government employ as caulker as Government has a good many steam… Read More
