Label waterstained, a little wear to tail of spine, staples rusted. Ownership inscription to flyleaf dated 1914, a few pencil notes and underlinings. The 4th edition of this work was the first to include a vocabulary, here separately paginated to the rear.

Inscribed to flyleaf ‘to Helen with love from Hugh MacDiarmid, June 1945.’ The sixth book in the publisher’s Poetry Scotland Series.

Glasgow: Duncan Glen, 1965. LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, 8vo, pp. 13, [1]. Original blue card wrappers printed in white. Wrappers a touch sunned, corners bumped. Signed by MacDiarmid to the limitation-page. Two 1930s poems - ‘By Wauchopeside’ and ‘The Diamond Body’ - in a later limited printing. The limitation page states 350 numbered copies of which the first 50 are signed, this copy designated ‘extra’ and neatly signed beneath.

[Glasgow]: [The Citizens’ Theatre], 1962. Small broadside (204 x 252 mm). A touch toned to edges. A rare printing of a poem by MacDiarmid reflecting on a verse from psalm 106 (‘And He gave them their request; but sent leanness into to their soul’), written for the Citizen Theatre’s production of the Bertholt Brecht play Der gute Mensch von Sezuan. It was issued with the programme of the 1962 production and is institutionally scarce, with Library Hub and Worldcat recording NLS only; The University of South Carolina also holds a copy.

A transcript of a conversation between MacDiarmid and publisher Duncan Glen which took place on the 25th of October 1968 at Macdiarmid’s home in Candymill. The first 55 copies were issued with an extra limitation sheet, numbered and signed in ink by both authors.

One opening and rear endpapers discoloured from newspaper clippings now removed. Dustjacket creased and marked, head of spine panel a little chipped. Inscribed to flyleaf: ‘For my old friend, Great tutor and Great Scot with gratitude and affection, from Hugh MacDiarmid’.

London: MacGibbon & Kee, 1969. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 57, [1]. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, peach dustjacket printed in brown and purple. Dark stain to top edge of book, showing in top margin throughout.

Edinburgh: The Scottish Sculpture Trust, 1978. Single sheet (A3 size) folded in half to form 4 pages, printed in colour. A little creased. A scarce leaflet soliciting funds to commission a sculpture in memory of the poet Hugh MacDiarmid in his birthplace of Langholm in the Scottish borders. It is illustrated with photographic images of the site, and contains paragraphs about MacDiarmid himself, the Scottish sculpture Trust and its fundraising goals, and Macdiarmid’s connection to Langholm. It also quotes liberally from his poetry, with extracts from A Drunk Man looks at the Thistle and the Second Hymn to Lenin. The appeal was successful and the sculpture by Jake Harvey was unveiled in 1985. Library Hub records just two copies, in NLS and NLW.

[London]: Published by the Covent Garden Press in conjunction with INCA Books, 1973. FIRST EDITION, NO. 20 OF 100 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, 16mo, pp. [16]. Original blue cloth, front board lettered in black, dustjacket printed in blue and black. A fine copy. Signed and numbered by MacDiarmid in ink to flyleaf. Published in an edition of 600 copies, of which the first hundred are meant to be signed and numbered by the poet. It has been suggested that far fewer than 100 copies were actually signed and numbered.

Wrappers a little discoloured, small chip to spine fold. Ownership inscription of Duncan Glen to flyleaf, numbered in ink to limitation-page. The text of a speech given by Hugh MacDiarmid in tribute to his friend, the writer Sydney Goodsir Smith, on the presentation of the Sir Thomas Urquhart Award to the latter on 14th December 1962. It was printed in an edition of 135 copies, of which the first 35 were signed and specially bound. This copy from the regular issue belonged to the poet, publisher and long-time champion of MacDiarmid’s work, Duncan Glen.

MacDiarmid’s first collection of poetry in its first issue binding of darker cloth with ‘William Blackwood and Sons: Edinburgh and London’ to the foot of the spine.
