Description:
London: Cassell and Co, 1891. 3 volumes. First edition, with 16 pages of ads dated "5 G.9.91." 8vo, original brown cloth lettered in gilt on spines. 232, ads; 239; 232. Internally clean and tight with hinges unrepaired, original cloth in good order and now housed in a fine half morocco slipcase. SCARCE, especially so in original cloth. THE LITTLE MINISTER is set in Thrums, a Scottish weaving village based on Barrie’s birthplace, and concerns Gavin Dishart, a young impoverished minister with his first congregation. The weavers he serves soon riot in protest against reductions in their wages and harsh working conditions. It was Barrie’s first work to achieve a high level of success and largely established his reputation. It is a sentimental novel that Barrie would also later produce on stage, again successfully. The work was written over 15 years prior to the introduction of his most famous character, Peter Pan.

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1978. First Edition. Profusely illustrated with photographs and maps throughout. 8vo, publisher's original black cloth, blocked and lettered in silver and gold on the spine panel and in blind on the upper cover, in the decorated dustjacket. xvii, 793 pp. A fine copy, the book is clean and tight and sound, the dustjacket shows only very minor evidence at the extremities of age or use. FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT HISTORICAL WORK ABOUT ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST REVERED MILITARY FIGURES. Manchester wrote of MacArthur that "[he] was a great thundering paradox of a man, noble and ignoble, inspiring and outrageous, arrogant and shy the best of men and the worst of men, the most protean, most ridiculous, and most sublime. No more baffling, exasperating soldier ever wore a uniform. Flamboyant, imperious, and apocalyptic, he carried the plumage of a flamingo, could not acknowledge errors, and tried to cover up his mistakes with sly, childish tricks. Yet he was… Read More

I suppose I am the ten-millionth reader to say that HUCKLEBERRY FINN is an extraordinary work. Indeed, for all I know, it is a great novel. Flawed, quirky, uneven, not above taking cheap shots and cashing far to many checks (it is rarely above milking its humor)---all the same, what a book we have here !...One always does surrender sooner or later to a book with a strong magnetic field. Boston: Massachusetts Historical Society, 1897. FROM THE PERSONAL LIBRARY OF SAMUEL ELIOT MORISON, with his notes. 8vo , journal extract, bound with metal clips, plain paper cover calligraphed “Agnese/Atlasses/Winsor” in Morison’s hand. 372-386. Some expected edgewear; minor tears throughout, some repaired with tape. A transcription of an address on the work of Baptista Agnese, the sixteenth century’s most prolific cartographer and atlas-maker. “He is generally thought to have expended more care upon the appearance of his maps than upon securing correspondence in them to the latest views. These divergences are of course most apparent in the American parts of his atlases, as it was a period necessarily of constant change in the geographical conceptions of the New World.” [p. 372] This copy includes copious notes in Morison’s hand.
