Description:
[n.p., Paris?], 1792 First edition. Quarter early nineteenth-century navy calf over marbled boards, marbled edges. . Two volumes, octavo. . Small worn spots on each back cover, a few light pencil marks in text, but generally a very good, attractive set. Armorial bookplate of the Bibliothèque de Mouchy in each volume. This is an important political treatise by Necker (1732-1804), minister of finance under Louis XVI, whose dismissal in part led to the storming of the Bastille. His inability to deal with France's finances after the Revolution led to his retirement in 1790. Necker was a big supporter of the American Revolutionary War, and the father of Madame de Staël. In this work he discusses executive power in France, America, and some of the smaller European states. He compares at length the French constitution of 1791 and the new American Constitution, discussing the separation of powers of the various branches of government.

Description:
London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson…S. Draper…J. Robertson… 1752 First and only edition. A rare example of eighteenth-century literary (as opposed to moral or political) criticism addressed to a single work by a living contemporary. . New marbled boards. . Octavo. Very good. William Mason (1725-97) was a friend of Thomas Gray and Horace Walpole, and he had lengthy correspondence with both. He became Gray's literary executor and edited his poems and letters, and wrote his life. His own works include Elfrida (1751), Caractacus (1759), and The English Garden (four volumes, 1771-81), which expresses his enthusiasm for the picturesque. Warburton and Boswell were among the admirers of Elfrida, "written on the model of the ancient Greek tragedy," though Johnson found in it only "now and then some good imitations of Milton's bad manner." This work has also been attributed to David Mallet.

Description:
Geneve: Chez Henri-Albert Gosse & Compagnie, 1743 First French edition of Reid's Abstract of Sir Isaac Newton's Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms, which first appeared in 1732. Another French abridgement of this Newton work was published in 1725, appearing at the end of Volume VII or Prideaux's Histoire des Juifs (1725), but that was unauthorized and was the work of another translator. Modern antique-style calf over marbled boards, gilt spine. . Octavo. A little light foxing, title-page has some minor chips and one small stain. Still, a very good copy of a scarce work. OCLC lists seven copies of this work, five in North America—including two copies at Berkeley and copies at the University of Chicago, Kent State, and the Burndy Library.

London: S. Palmer, 1728 First edition. Contemporary full calf ruled in gilt, rebacked with gilt calf spine label. Edges sprinkled red. . Quarto. Engraved title-page vignette, twelve folding engraved plates, plus engraved headbands, tail-pieces, and historiated initials by John Pine after J. Grison. Pine, of course, is known for his wonderful, engraved edition of Horace. With a subscriber's list. Light foxing. Light offsetting from engravings, which are lightly foxed with some having a few small stains. Occasional minor ink and pencil marginalia. Ink initials and red ink stamp on verso of title page. A very good, large copy. "Dr. Pemberton studied under Boerhaave, preparedthe Fifth London Pharmacopoeia and was invited by Newton to edit the third (1726) edition of the Principia. This study of Newton's philosophy is interesting as being the account of a close friend. The preface contains the author's recollections of Newton, especially in his old age. There is also a poem on Sir Isaac by Richard Glover…
