Browned throughout and last page with a small restoration. The last line of page 157 was badly printed so it has been completed in pencil. Second edition - the first was published in 1627 - "reveuë corrigée & augmentée" by Naudé himself, of this first treatise on librarianship that was published in France. This is the first work that deals with how to form a library. Naudé (1600 - 1653), who was the librarian to Cardinal Mazarin, also devotes a part of the book on the importance of opening the library to the public. The Bibliothèque Mazarine became the first public library in France because of Naudé's insistence and was open to the public as early as 1644. (pp. 41-48 with a light waterstain in the margin) Charles Nodier (1780-1844) settled in Paris after he had been appointed librarian of the Arsenal library in 1824. There he soon became one of the leaders of the literary life in Paris. He assembled three collections which were not very large but contained only carefully chosen books. In the Grolier Club catalogue of French auction sales # 595 is mentioned that "Lonchamp records that Noder compiled this catalogue himself; according to Graesse, many of the lots sold for extremely low prices". Rare catalogue.
