[Browning, Mt, 1900. Very good plus.. Fifty-four real photo postcards, each approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Occasional minor wear; light dust soiling. A substantial collection of almost fifty-five real photo postcards carrying the images and work of Thomas B. Magee, a noted photographer of the Blackfeet Native American tribes in Northwestern Montana during the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Magee maintained a commercial studio in Browning, Montana, which was continued by his son Henry following his death in 1930. The elder Magee was married to a Blackfeet Pikuni woman named Julia Howling and was a friendly colleague of Walter McClintock, the most prolific of the early 20th-century Montana Indian photographers. Like McClintock, he had the trust of the Blackfeet (in this case, because of his marriage), and therefore had greater access to their daily lives and activities. A substantial collection of nearly 165 real photo postcards of Native Americans in Arizona and New Mexico by Burton Frasher, one of the most prolific western photographers during the first half of the 20th century. "Burton Frasher Sr. (1888-1955) began his commercial photography business in Lordsburg (now LaVerne) California in 1914. In 1921, he moved his studio to Pomona, California, where he began to sell his own increasingly popular picture postcard views of the Southwest. By the end of the 1920's, what had begun as a sideline became Frasher's main business focus. Group of documents concerning oil leases for the Wellsville Oil Company on lands owned by the Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma. Most of the documents are from the desk of Gabe E. Parker, the Superintendent for the Tribes. The contents concern royalties, leases, inheritance issues on leased, and requests for delinquent reports from Wellsville. Several documents name specific tribal land holders or mention legal issues surrounding the owner and the oil company. From the early 18th century, Catholics were prohibited from joining Masonic orders, but the popularity of freemasonry in the United States seems to have generated considerable interest among Spanish speakers. At least as early as 1818, publishers in the U.S. issued Spanish-language books explaining, supporting, and critiquing freemasonry. The translation of this extended article, apparently adapted from an encyclopedia, is credited to "el Obispo de Sonora," probably Juan Navarrete, who occupied that post from 1919 to 1968. The work provides an extensive description of masonry, its organization, and activities, with the goal of dispelling any masonic "propaganda" that attempted to portray their groups simply as social and benevolent societies. A striking promotional poster for the Nebraska town of Alliance, issued during the Great Depression. Alliance is located in the northwestern corner of Nebraska, as the present poster attests: "Alliance, the livestock, potato and small grain center of Nebraska, is justly proud of its reputation as the host city of Western Nebraska. The town has also been situated along the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad line since 1888, which resulted in heightened prominence for the city (and a name change from Grand Lake to Alliance in 1891). [Columbus, Oh: Ward Bros, 1891. Good plus.. [12]pp. in an accordion fold. Oblong 12mo. Original black-stamped cloth boards. Wear and chipping to spine ends and corners. First fold separated and reinforced with tape on verso. Light wear else. Pictorial souvenir for the tiny town of Beatrice, Nebraska, located in the southeast corner of the state. The town, founded in 1857, experienced a boom in the late-19th century when three major railroads passed through it. The present work opens with a view of the county courthouse, followed by panels containing the railroad station, banks, and industries such as the Beatrice Paving & Building Brick Co., the Canning Works, sewer pipe works, and others. Includes street views and residences, as well as churches and schools -- forty-seven images total. The rear pastedown contains an ad for William H. Hoffstot, bookseller and stationer, and dealer in the present souvenir album. We locate a single copy in OCLC, at the Denver Public Library.

Fremont: Hammond Printing Company, 1910. Very good.. [106]pp. plus folding plate. Oblong quarto. Original brown printed wrappers, tied with cord. Light chipping and wear to covers and spine. Some light internal wear, first page soiled. "Fremont is a city of 12,000 inhabitants possessing advantages and ambitions that distinguish it as a place of certain future development, conservatively speaking, and even larger probability." Extensive pictorial promotional work for the town of Fremont, often lauded as the most beautiful city in Nebraska. The work is comprised almost entirely of half tones depicting all aspects of the town, including many very ordinary residences -- an unusual feature in such a work. The folding plate is a large panoramic image of the plant of the Fremont Brewing Company, showing the brewery, ice plant, engine house, malt house, office, and bottling house. Rare, with two copies located in OCLC, both in Nebraska libraries.

Large folding map, 25.5 x 24 inches, separated and laid in; lower third of map separated along much of the lower fold, some light dampstaining and soiling at edge. A scarce directory for Phelps County, Nebraska, located in the south central part of the state, near Kearney. The directory is divided by town, beginning with the rural residents and moving on to Holdredge, the largest town in the county. Sections are demarcated by a plate of ads (printed on red paper) and a map of the town. The map for Holdredge is a double-page spread, folded, while maps for other towns are single pages. Lincoln, 1874. Very good.. Eighteen partially-printed documents, each two pages, completed in manuscript. Large folio. Old folds, some tears, a few partial fold separations, scattered foxing. Overall a nice group. A collection of eighteen contracts made between land speculators and the Nebraska Land Department of the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad Company, for defined parcels of land purchased through the Nebraska General Land Office. Fifteen of the eighteen contracts are dated in 1870 (just three short years after Nebraska achieved statehood), with two dated in 1871, and the last in 1874. The contracts are made between the railroad company and mainly buyers from Nebraska, but also speculators from New York, Illinois, and Michigan. The parcels are defined by section, township, range, and more specific survey details. All of the contracts also include payment terms for ten-year financing of the land purchases. [Hildreth?], 1922. About very good.. [12]pp. Original grey printed wrappers, stapled. Lightly creased, some slight wear. Pencil annotations to covers and contents. Otherwise clean internally. Unrecorded telephone directory for the tiny village of Hildreth, Nebraska, located about twenty miles due south of Kearny. The census for 1920 recorded 453 residents in Hildreth -- its peak population. This slim volume gives instructions for using the telephone exchange, followed by an alphabetical listing of residents and businesses. Many of the residents have German surnames. A contemporary hand has annotated the text, correcting phone numbers and names as needed, and noting "Pd" with the date in several places. Local advertisements throughout. We find no record in OCLC for any Hildreth directory, and indeed wonder how many times they may have needed to print a new edition. An obscure and ephemeral piece of Western Americana.

[Burlington, Ia: Burlington and Missouri River Railroad Company, 1872. Very good.. 24pp. 24mo. Original yellow printed wrappers. Light soiling and wear. Lovely little promotional work advertising lands along the Burlington Route in Nebraska and Iowa. At this time the Burlington Route ran from Burlington, Iowa, across Iowa and Nebraska to Fort Kearney, where it linked up with the Union Pacific. The present work is comprised primarily of price charts for lands in Iowa and Nebraska, with interest rates and terms on different acreages. "These Iowa and Nebraska lands are not exceeded in fertility, beauty and all attractions and advantages of locality and soil which are essential in the estimation of farmers, by any region in the world...." A map of the route is printed on the rear cover. An ephemeral little piece -- not located in OCLC.

Denver: Clason Map Co, 1914. About good.. 48pp. plus folding map, 14.5 x 27.5 inches. 12mo. Green printed card cover. Light wear, moderate dampstaining to covers and text. Map with slight separations at some folds. Faintly musty. An early issue of Clason's Guide for Nebraska, copyright dated 1914. With some brief facts about the state, as well as a list of the cities and towns. The map is marked with early auto routes. We find no copy of this issue in OCLC, the earliest being for 1916 located in a single copy at the Newberry Library.

Madison, Ne, 1897. Good plus.. [12]pp. Small newspaper folio. Stitched and folded. Light wear at edges; short separations along fold line from fore-edge. Light tanning. Special twenty-fifth anniversary issue of this small-town Nebraska newspaper. The first four pages contain a history of the paper, but the work is more interesting for its eight-page photographic spread that documents the homes, commercial and municipal buildings, and surrounding scenery of the tiny, rural town of Madison at the end of the 19th century.

Fremont: W.P. Fritz, 1905. Very good.. 93,[11]pp. Quarto. Original pictorial printed wrappers, stapled. Spine lightly chipped, front cover starting, light soiling to wrappers. Internally clean. Handsome illustrated promotional work for Fremont, the most beautiful city in all Nebraska. Opening with a brief history of the town, it continues with numerous half tone illustrations and descriptions of all the major landmarks, including the New York Hotel, the Plunge Baths at Chautauqua, the Opera House, the Baltimore Hotel, many grand individual residences, the hospital, industries, banks, schools, and several street views. The final leaves are all devoted to illustrations of residences. A note on the title page indicates that "the pictures in this book were made from photographs from the studio of W.P. Fritz." We locate three copies in OCLC, at the New York Historical Society, Nebraska Historical, and Southern Methodist University.

Columbus, Ne: Columbus Printing & Specialty House, 1910. Very good.. 16pp. plus two leaves of ads. Original beige wrappers, printed in red, stapled. Minor wear and soiling. "This, the first issue of 'The Sandburr,' will undoubtedly mark the beginning of a new era in the history of the Columbus High School. For years we have struggled along without any athletic associations, literary or musical clubs, or official organ of the student body. ... We must all pitch in and boost for our athletic teams; our debaters -- if we have any -- our musical organizations; and last, but not least, we must all boost for 'The Sandburr.'" Contains a short piece of fiction, some notes on the athletics, current events, and local ads. A handsome little production -- we find no record of it in OCLC, and so do not know whether it lasted beyond its first issue.

Denver: Clason Map Co, 1920. Good.. 31,[1]pp. plus folding map, 21 x 28 inches. Original printed card covers, stapled. Wear and creasing to covers, light wear to text. Travel guide for Nebraska, providing brief history and overview for travelers -- particularly auto drivers -- as well as state and city maps, auto routes and distances, and railroads. There is also a commercial index of towns with hotels, industries, altitudes, and population details. There are single-page city maps of Omaha and Lincoln. The large map is printed on both sides, depicting the state on one side showing railroads, while the verso shows "paved roads, all weather roads and other thoroughfares." We locate four copies in OCLC, at Yale, the Colorado School of Mines, SMU, and a copy in Germany.

Los Angeles: Automobile Club of Southern California, 1918. Overall, very good.. Map on seven individual cards, each 3.75 x 10 inches, in original printed storage envelope. Envelope with some dust soiling and light wear. Light tanning to map cards. Rare map of a western section of the Lincoln Highway from Cheyenne to Omaha, published at the end of the 1910s by the Automobile Club of California. The highway, as conceived and dedicated in 1913, ran from Times Square in New York City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco on state and federal roads; today the route is largely superseded by Interstate 80. This part of the route, consisting of just under 600 miles of roads, ran on U.S. Highways 30, from Cheyenne passing through Kimball, Big Springs, Ogallala, North Platte, Kearney, Grand Island, Columbus, and Fremont before reaching Omaha. The Automobile Club of Southern California published several such sectional route maps of the Lincoln Highway during the late 1910s, but the present map is not located in any… Read More

Light wear and soiling internally. Promotional work for the small town of Aurora, Nebraska, located between Kearny and Lincoln, near the Platte River. "Aurora is a clean city and will continue to be so. It has no saloons, brothels, or gambling houses." Primarily pictorial in nature, the work features images of all the major town edifices, as well as a substantial number of residences. The final page contains a group portrait of young women holding ice skates, captioned, "It's Saturday and we're goin' skatin'." Three copies located in OCLC, at the Denver Public Library, Princeton, and the Fiske Genealogical Center in Washington State.

Beatrice: Daily Democrat, 1888. About good.. 24pp. on a single folded sheet. Light soiling and wear, separating at central fold. Unrecorded and ephemeral promotional brochure for the tiny town of Beatrice, Nebraska, located in the southeast corner of the state. The town, founded in 1857, experienced a boom in the late-19th century when three major railroads passed through it. The present work gives a brief history of the state, the town, and the town's merits for manufacturers and agriculture, while a full panel advertises a series of rail excursions to the town from various locations in the East.
