Description:
Group of 17 (seventeen) lithographically printed calling cards, various dimensions (smallest 40 x 75 mm, largest 57 x 93 mm); a number are annotated, some with PPC (Pour prendre congé, indicating a temporary absence), and several with the name of Major (or Lt. Colonel) Neild; all in good condition, with occasional light marks and toning. A fascinating little archive which provides us with an insight into the protocols of Sydney society of the 1890s and also into the social circle of the family of John Cash Neild (1846-1911), MLA for Paddington and Major (later Lt. Colonel) in the St George’s English Rifles, a patriotic military unit which he raised himself in Sydney. It includes the personal calling cards of high profile politicians, the vice-consul for Italy, the wife of the French consul, a prominent Anglican clergyman, an academic, and members of the local military and their wives. The cards printed for women are slightly larger ""at home"" cards which have the times they are able to be… Read More

Photograph album, quarto (270 x 220 mm), original full black morocco over heavy boards, upper board with gilt-tooled ornament and title, silk endpapers, the front free-endpaper with a contemporary inscription in ink: 'A Souvenir of Victoria. To Mrs. Rose from A. & S. M. Melbourne, 4th January 1882'; containing [36] albumen print photographs individually mounted on the rectos of gilt-edged card leaves, all (bar two) with captions in pencil in period hand on the mount below the image (these were presumably written by one of the couple who presented the album to Mrs. Rose); while most of the prints have good definition and tonal range, a number are faded to varying degrees; the endpapers have foxing but the mounts are generally clean, with occasional spotting. Charles Nettleton (1826-1902) worked as an official photographer to the Victorian government and the City of Melbourne. Description:
Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 90 x 58 mm; laid down on a section cut from a nineteenth-century album page, the mount inscribed 'Sandridge Railway Pier'; in good condition. An early photographic view of the Sandridge Railway Pier (now known as Station Pier) at Port Melbourne, which was opened in 1854. Although the photographer is unidentified, we believe the image was probably taken by the prolific Charles Nettleton, as the pier was one of his favourite subjects and he photographed it on many occasions in the 1860s and '70s. The photograph was purchased as a souvenir by a visitor to Melbourne in November, 1866 - a view of the Burke and Wills Monument on the same album page was captioned with this date.

Forty-one issues, quarto, original stapled wrappers, various paginations between 16 and 20 pages, all illustrated; an expected amount of toning and occasional mild foxing; overall very good condition throughout; a rare complete set of the Australian issues of one of the most significant counterculture publications of the 60s. The Australian satirical magazine Oz was an important phenomenon of the underground press of the 1960s. Initially edited by Richard Neville, Richard Walsh and the revered pop artist Martin Sharp (who designed most of the covers as well as contributing cartoons and other art work), it was published in Sydney between 1963 and 1969. A separate London version of Oz, edited by Neville, Jim Anderson and Felix Dennis, was published from 1967 until 1973. Description:
Sydney : NewSouth Publishing, 2012. Quarto, illustrated wrappers, pp. 272, edges lightly toned, illustrated. Author, illustrator, printmaker and natural historian, John William Lewin created the first illustrated book ever published in Australia - Birds of New South Wales, in 1813. Featuring more than 150 exquisite artworks, Mr JW Lewin takes a fascinating look at Lewin's life and work, his place in colonial Australian society and the natural history craze that swept the world at that time. When Lewin arrived in New South Wales in 1800, the fledgling colony was by no means a favoured destination for artistic, ambitious Englishmen. Yet to Lewin, Australia was simply 'the finest country in the world', and it offered him the respectability and social standing he could never have found in England. Written by Richard Neville, Mitchell Librarian at the State Library of New South Wales, this book is a visually stunning testament to Lewin's artistic legacy.
