"Arthur Hughes (1832-1915) was the most prolific, imaginative and adaptable illustrator of the mid-nineteenth century, Maroussia Oakley argues... This book is certainly an important contribution to publishing history, especially for the purposes of understanding the complex ways in which publishers, illustrators, editors, and writers interacted with each other." - Artemis Alexiou, Printing History "A marvelous collection of Hughes's uniquely beautiful illustrations and an exceptional amount of information on their history." - Barbara Amell, Wingfold, Spring 2017 The Book and Periodical Illustrations of Arthur Hughes is the first detailed account of the work of this somewhat neglected Pre-Raphaelite artist between 1855 and 1913. Many of his books were intended for children, including such classics as At…

Description:
New Castle: Oak Knoll Press and the American Historical Print Collectors Society, 2008. cloth with dustjacket. Doolittle, Amos. 8.5 x 11 inches. cloth with dustjacket. 192 pages. As a copperplate engraver, Amos Doolittle (1754-1832) played an important role during the American colonies' war for independence and the early years of the new nation. He completed his apprenticeship in New Haven, Connecticut, around 1770 and continued to work actively in that city for over sixty years. His first known attempts are the views of the battles of Lexington and Concord--four plates that he engraved, printed and published in 1775. Even today, Doolittle's first attempt, although crude in workmanship, continues to be often reproduced. Doolittle did general engraving and printing throughout his career. Maps for atlases and illustrations for books became his specialty, but he also engraved maps and broadsides that were published separately. Scholars have identified more than 600 Doolittle engravings, both signed and…

Philadelphia, PA: Ink Fish Press, 2004. gray cloth, debossed goose on the front panel. Ink Fish Press. oblong 8vo. gray cloth, debossed goose on the front panel. unpaginated. First edition of 100 numbered copies signed by O'Brien. Humorous story of a renter's woes: "The Story of Little Goose was inspired by my first landlord experience when moving to Philadelphia from Los Angeles. I had a rough time finding a place to live, and then the apartment I did rent leaked when it rained. The leaking could be defined more accurately as: waterfalls down walls, saturated carpets, mold released every time the carpets were re-saturated. I kept asking for the problem to be fixed, but of course nothing happened. After two months I'd had enough and many pieces which made it possible for me to move, fell into place. The actual book originated as an assignment. We pulled two images and two pieces of text from an envelope and were instructed to create a book. I pulled the goose, a postcard with an image of Philadelphia…
