Spine with gilt floral ornaments. Marbled endpapers. Edges speckled red. = A fine, complete suite of cattle etchings on light-greyish wove paper, mounted on larger, white sheets, by the Dutch (Amsterdam) artist and engraver Anthony Oberman (1781-1845). Each illustration is signed, numbered and monthly dated by the artist, inside the frame. Placed in numerical and chronological order, dates range from July 1809 to January 1811. Work of Oberman is present in the Rijksmuseum and other art institutes in the Netherlands. Reproductions of his work are popular, but original printings are rare. Later blind half cloth over marbled boards. = A unique association copy of the first volume of this major lepidopterological work, containing fine, hand-coloured plates and systematic revisions and descriptions of a great number of butterflies from various temperate and tropical regions. This copy with a signed, handwritten dedication by Charles Oberthür to "Monsieur le Docteur Christ"; in the same hand, a clarification of plates I-IV, differing from the printed version in its details of the localities. The recipient was, in all probability, the Swiss medical doctor and botanist Konrad Hermann Heinrich Christ (1833-1933), who published on Lepidoptera between 1873 and 1897. Dark green morocco strip with gilt title mounted on spine. Original printed wrappers preserved. = Rare first volume of the Études, of which 21 volumes were published. This, however, is the only part in this series, specifically dealing with the butterflies of Algeria. More than a quarter century later, from 1904 onwards, additional studies on North-African Lepidoptera were written and published by Oberthur in his Études de lépidopterologie comparée. The first letter typed, with hand-written signature and additional handwriting; the second entirely handwritten, signed and dated. = Two letters, on the stationery of the Naturhistoriska Riksmuseum in Stockholm, from the Swedish malacologist Nils Hjalmar Odhner (1884-1973) to the French marine biologist, ichthyologist, parasitologist, and director of the Service des Pêches Coloniales, Robert Philippe F. Dollfus (1887-1976). Dollfus was a son of the malacologist Gustave Frédérique Dollfus (co-author of the famous Les mollusques marins du Rousillon), and was interested in Mollusca himself. Paul Henri Fischer wrote his necrologie in the Journal de Conchyliologie 114(3-4), p. 131. In these letters, Odhner discusses several topics, including the whereabouts of captain C. O. Spines and boards with gilt ornamental borders and title. Top edges gilt. = A sumptuous "Festschrift", on the occasion of fiftieth anniversary of the most important technical university of Central Europe, now called the ETH, in Zürich. The first part deals with its history, the second with the history of Zürich, with, for instance, many fine photographs of of important buildings. Provenance: an ETH stamp (cancelled) on title pages verso. Label on each spine foot; label removed from rear pastedown with some paper loss; some wear to spine tops and endpaper margins, otherwise a very good, clean set.

Original printed wrappers. = A detailed and well-illustrated work on very well-preserved Palaeozoic molluscs (mainly gastropods and bivalves, which is unusual). Written by the French palaeontologist Daniel Victor Oehlert (1849-1920). Published in the society's Mémoires. Uncut. Wrappers chipped at edges, damp stain to the lower inner corner of the plates - not visible on the text leaves; otherwise, a very good, clean copy. Rare.

Essen, G. Bädeker, 1825. Two volumes in one. 8vo (19.8 x 12.0 cm). 782 pp.; one folding lithographed plate with several geological profiles. Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards. Paper label with the title in an old hand on the spine. Original endpapers. = One of the first geological descriptions of this southern part of Germany (and adjacent countries), viz. the Taunus, Schwarzwald, Vosges, as well as the Swiss Jura and the Schwäbische Alb. Especially interesting because of the description of the petrographic formation of these mountains. Karl [Carl] August Ludwig Freiherr von Oeynhausen (1795-1865), the main author, was a wealthy German geologist and patron, who popularised the salt bath of the famous spa now named Bad Oeynhausen. In the introduction on page v the authors state "Mit dem vorliegende Werke in Verbindung steht eine geognostische Charte in 2 Blättern", which is nearly always lacking as it was published by another publishing house in Berlin. Marie Matilda Ogilvie (later: Dame Maria Matilda Gordon) (1864-1939) was the first British woman to receive a PhD in geology. "She was also a supporter and campaigner for the rights and equality of children and women" (Wikipedia). Original printed wrappers. = A thorough description of a most colourful stork species by the versatile and prolific Scottish ornithologist William Robert Ogilvie-Grant (1863-1924). The fine plate is by the famous Danish bird illustrator Henrik Grönvold (1858-1940). Published together with nine other onithological papers, including one beautifully illustrated by H. Goodchild (chromolithograph of Parus atlas), Uncut. Some wear to spine ends; otherwise very good, clean, unmarked.

Speckled edges. = Rare and very nicely illustrated publication in The Ibis, a famous ornithological journal (as a supplement to the 10th series). Later, an enlarged edition was published in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London. This version, however, contains the original descriptions of new species. The fine illustrations are by the great Danish bird painter Henrik Grönvold (1858-1940) . The 'Ibis' is the oldest and most beautifully illustrated bird journal ever published. Provenance: on the front free endpaper recto the bookplate of the Dutch naturalist and former director of the Amsterdam Zoological Museum, Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort (1879-1968). Blind quarter cloth over printed wrappers. = Thesis of Maryse Ohnenstetter, dealing with sections of the oceanic crust and underlying upper mantle that has been uplifted and exposed above sea level and often emplaced onto continental crustal rocks. Ophiolites received their name from their snake skin texture. A very good, clean copy. Rare.
